What is the US Open? 

Beginning in 1881, the US Open is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world. It’s a hardcourt tournament held annually in Queens, New York City. The tournament is the fourth and final Grand Slam tennis event, held after the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. 

As a result, it brings together the world’s best men and women tennis players to compete in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The singles events are played over several rounds, where the winner is crowned the US Open champion. 

When is the US Open? 

The US Open takes place from Sunday, 23 August to Sunday, 13 September. The first week is known as Fan Week. It features the US Open Qualifying Tournament and the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. After this, the main draw gets under way beginning on Sunday, 30 August.  

• 23-29 August: Qualifying Rounds for men’s and women’s singles and mixed doubles 

• 30 August-13 September: Main Draw 

• 12 September: Women’s Singles Final 

• 13 September: Men’s Singles Final 

Where is the Tournament Held? 

The US Open is played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. This complex is home to several famous courts, including the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis stadium in the world. Many of the biggest matches of the tournament, such as the singles finals, are held here.  

What is a Grand Slam? 

A Grand Slam, or the Majors, consists of the four major tournaments in tennis. They offer the most ranking points, prize money, and have the biggest fan following. The tournaments are overseen by World Tennis, rather than the Association of Tennis Professionals or Women’s Tennis Association. However, both the ATP and WTA ranking points are awarded based on players’ performance.  

The Grand Slam tournaments consist of the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Each contest is played over two weeks. The Australian and US tournaments are played on hard courts. The French Open is played on a clay court, while Wimbledon is played on a grass court. This means that each tournament has its own challenges and advantages. 

Winning all four Grand Slams in a player’s career is known as a career Grand Slam. Only the best tennis players have accomplished such an achievement. Winning all four within one calendar year is known as a calendar-year Grand Slam. Only five players ever have accomplished such a title. No player in the last 55 years, outside of Steffi Graf in 1988, has won all four Grand Slams.  

How Does the US Open Work? 

The US Open includes several different competitions, including singles and doubles tournaments for both men and women, as well as mixed doubles. The singles tournament begins with a 128-player main draw. From here, players must win successive matches to progress through the tournament.  

The tournament follows a first (128 players), second (64 players), and third (32 players) round structure. Players then progress to Round of 16 if they win their matches. From here, they enter the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the US Open final.  

In the men’s singles, matches are played as best of five sets. For the women’s singles, matches are played as best of three sets. This is standard across the Grand Slam tournaments.
