ATP and WTA Tennis Rankings Explained: How Do They Work?

Tennis rankings are one of the most important parts of professional tennis, changing almost every week as players compete around the world. Who decides the ATP and WTA rankings?

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) manages the women’s singles and doubles rankings. While singles and doubles have official world rankings, there is no official ranking system for mixed doubles.

How do tennis rankings work? 

The ATP and WTA rankings are based on a rolling 52-week system. Instead of counting everything a player has achieved during their career, only results from the previous 12 months are included. 

Rankings are usually updated every Monday. The only exceptions are during events that last two weeks, including the Grand Slams, Indian Wells and the Miami Open, where rankings are updated after the tournament has finished. 

Every tournament offers ranking points. The better a player performs, the more points they collect. Winning a title earns more points than reaching the semi-finals, while losing early means fewer points are added to their total. 

As tournaments return the following year, players defend the points they earned during the previous edition. Once those points are older than 52 weeks, they disappear from the rankings and are replaced by the latest result. This means rankings are constantly changing based on recent performances.

Why do players move up and down the rankings? 

One of the biggest reasons why rankings change is because players are defending points from the previous year. 

For example, if Naomi Osaka won a tournament last season but loses in the quarterfinals this year, she will lose a large number of ranking points. That can cause her to drop several places. 

On the other hand, if Jannik Sinner reaches a better result than they managed the year before, they earn extra points and can climb the rankings. If he repeats the exact same result, his ranking points stay almost the same because they replace old points with an equal amount. 

This system rewards players who continue producing strong results year after year instead of relying on one successful tournament. 

How does the ATP ranking system work? 

The ATP rankings are based on a player’s 19 best results over the previous 52 weeks. 

These results usually include: 

• All four Grand Slam tournaments. 

• Eight mandatory ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. 

• Seven additional tournaments from approved ATP and ITF events. 

Those additional tournaments can include: 

• ATP 500 events 

• ATP 250 tournaments 

• ATP Challenger Tour events 

• ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments 

• Other eligible ATP competitions 

At the end of the season, the world’s top eight players qualify for the ATP Finals. This event is separate from the regular ranking calculation and acts as a bonus tournament. Any points earned there are added on top of a player’s regular total. 

Because only the best results count, players often enter several tournaments during the season to improve their chances of collecting more ranking points. 

How does the WTA ranking system work? 

The WTA uses a similar approach but counts a smaller number of tournaments. Women’s singles rankings are based on a player’s 16 best results, while doubles rankings use the best 11 tournaments. 

For singles, the rankings generally include: 

• All four Grand Slam tournaments. 

• Four mandatory WTA 1000 events. 

• Eight additional results from approved tournaments. 

Those extra tournaments may include: 

• WTA 500 events. 

• WTA 250 tournaments. 

• WTA 125 tournaments. 

• ITF competitions. 

Like the ATP Tour, the season finishes with the WTA Finals. The top eight players qualify for this prestigious event, and any ranking points earned there are added as bonus points. 

This gives the world’s best players one final opportunity to improve their rankings before the season comes to an end. 

What happens if a player misses a mandatory tournament? 

Injuries, illness, and other unavoidable circumstances sometimes stop players from competing. The ATP and WTA have rules that help protect players in these situations. 

If a player misses a mandatory event because of injury or because they did not qualify, another eligible tournament result can replace the missing event. 

This means the ATP still counts 19 results, and the WTA still counts 16 results for singles rankings. The replacement result usually comes from another approved tournament played during the same 52-week period. 

Why are the rankings so important? 

World rankings affect almost every part of a professional tennis player’s career. Higher-ranked players receive better tournament seedings, which can give them an easier draw during the early rounds. This helps reduce the chances of meeting another top player too soon.
