What is at stake?
For Mamelodi Sundowns, the MTN8 represents an opportunity to end a frustrating run in a competition they have struggled to dominate despite their sustained success in the league and on the continent. The Brazilians have won the MTN8 only once under its current branding, in 2021, and coach Miguel Cardoso has made it clear that they want to approach this campaign differently.
Sundowns booked their semi-final place after a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Polokwane City in the quarter-finals. Golden Arrows, meanwhile, produced one of the surprises of the last eight by defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at FNB Stadium.
The first leg is therefore crucial. Sundowns will want to build a lead at home before travelling to King Zwelithini Stadium for the second leg on 30 August, while Arrows will be targeting a result that keeps the tie firmly within their reach.

Team news
Sundowns have suffered a major setback ahead of the first leg. Khuliso Mudau is expected to be out for at least six months after suffering a serious Achilles injury during Wednesday’s 2-0 league victory over Marumo Gallants. Zuko Mdunyelwa replaced him at right-back in that match and could be called upon again against Arrows.
The Brazilians also have Antonio Van Wyk, Teboho Mokoena, Keanu Cupido and Arthur Sales among their injury concerns.
There is some positive news, however. Sundowns go into the semi-final after beating Gallants 2-0, with Malibongwe Khoza and Cassius Mailula getting on the scoresheet.
Golden Arrows appear to have a much healthier squad and are expected to field a near full-strength team. They are also unbeaten in their opening three league matches, although all three have ended 0-0, before their 1-0 MTN8 quarter-final win over Chiefs.
Arrows are under new coach Pitso Dladla, who took charge ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. His side have already shown their ability to grind out results in knockout football.
Players to watch
Cassius Mailula – Mamelodi Sundowns
Mailula arrives with confidence after scoring the decisive goal in Sundowns’ 3-2 MTN8 quarter-final victory over Polokwane City and scoring again in the recent win over Gallants. His movement and finishing could be decisive.
Siyanda Ndlovu – Mamelodi Sundowns
Ndlovu’s pace and movement behind the defence could give Arrows problems, particularly if Sundowns dominate possession and force the visitors’ defensive line deeper.
Khulekani Shezi – Golden Arrows
Shezi was the match-winner against Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-final, scoring the only goal of the game to send Arrows into the last four. He will be one of the players Sundowns must keep under close watch.
Lungelo Nguse – Golden Arrows
Nguse’s energy and ability to contribute in transition could be important for Arrows. The visitors are unlikely to enjoy long periods of possession, making their counter-attacking moments particularly valuable.
The tactical battle
Sundowns should dominate possession and attempt to move Arrows from side to side before finding gaps around the penalty area.
Arrows’ biggest weapon will be their defensive organisation and ability to frustrate Sundowns. Their run of three consecutive 0-0 league draws shows how difficult they can be to break down.
For Dladla’s side, the challenge will be surviving Sundowns’ pressure while making the most of set pieces and counter-attacking opportunities.
Sundowns, meanwhile, must be careful not to become impatient. With the second leg still to come, conceding a cheap goal at home could completely change the complexion of the tie.
Prediction
Sundowns have the stronger squad, home advantage and a dominant historical record against Arrows. However, the visitors’ defensive approach and recent cup success make this a potentially tricky encounter.
I expect Sundowns to control the game but Arrows to make them work hard for every chance.
Prediction: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Golden Arrows
Sundowns should take a first-leg advantage, but Arrows’ defensive resilience means the tie is unlikely to be decided in Pretoria. Bet on the MTN with Bet.co.za.
