Cheetahs vs Boland Kavaliers: Preview and Predictions

The Currie Cup semi-final race is heating up as the Cheetahs face the Boland Kavaliers in a crucial Round 6 clash, with both sides chasing a big win.

Currie Cup Ninth Round

Round 6 of the 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division continues with another exciting encounter as the Toyota Cheetahs take on Sanlam Boland Kavaliers on Sunday, 23 August. The Cheetahs sit in second position on the log with 21 points. Boland Kavaliers sit in fourth position with 16 points.

Both sides enter this match on a high after wins last weekend. The Cheetahs come in on a two-win streak after defeating the Vodacom Bulls XV 62-52. They have been consistent throughout the season, losing only one match so far in round 3 to the Suzuki Griquas.

Boland, on the other hand, won their last match against the Fidelity ADT Lions 38-29. This came after back-to-back losses against the Hollywoodbets Sharks and the Airlink Pumas.

Why This Match Matters So Much

With only two rounds remaining after this fixture, every point could prove important in the race for a place in the Currie Cup semi-finals.

The Cheetahs have been one of the competition’s most consistent teams. They have won four of their five matches, with their only defeat coming against Suzuki Griquas in Round 3. Their latest win over the Bulls also highlighted their attacking threat.

Boland have also put themselves firmly in the play-off conversation. Their victory over the Lions ended a two-match losing streak and moved them into the top four.

A win for either side would be a major step towards securing a semi-final place.

Tactical Overview

Expect an entertaining contest between two sides that have shown they are capable of scoring lots of points.

The Cheetahs will likely look to build on the attacking momentum they created against the Bulls. Their first-half performance in Pretoria was particularly impressive, with seven tries giving them a 47-17 lead at half-time.

However, their second-half defensive performance against the Bulls will be a concern. The Bulls scored five second-half tries and came close to completing a remarkable comeback. The Cheetahs will need to maintain their concentration for the full 80 minutes against a Boland side that has already shown its ability to fight back from a significant deficit.

Boland, meanwhile, will take confidence from their comeback against the Lions. Their physical approach and attacking ability helped them turn a 17-0 into a nine-point victory.

Prediction

This could be one of the most competitive matches of Round 6, with both teams entering the fixture after important wins.

Boland have shown that they can cause problems for the stronger teams in the competition. But the Cheetahs’ attacking form and home advantage could give them the edge. Their 62-52 win over the Bulls demonstrated just how much firepower they have in their backline.

Prediction: Cheetahs to win.
