A Brief History of the Currie Cup 

Beginning in 1889, the Currie Cup is one of the oldest domestic rugby competitions in the world. But the competition’s name only came about in 1892 after Sir Donald Currie donated the trophy. He instructed that the trophy be handed to the team in South Africa with the best game. At the time, this was Griqualand West. 

However, at the inaugural Currie Cup tournament, the trophy was won by the Western Province, now known as the DHL Stormers XXIII. From here, it became the premier provincial rugby championship in South Africa.  

Why is the Currie Cup so important? 

The Currie Cup bridges the gap between school rugby, provincial academy rugby, age-group competitions, and the Springboks. It provides a playing ground for younger players to gain valuable experience against seasoned professionals.

How does the Currie Cup Premier Division work? 

In more recent years, the qualification for the Premier Division has changed. The four teams that participate in the United Rugby Championship South African Shield automatically qualify for the Currie Cup.  

The remaining teams qualify through strong performances in the SA Cup. This system rewards consistency and gives ambitious teams a chance to earn a promotion into the Currie Cup.  

During the league stage, every team plays each other once. Teams earn log points for victories, draws, and bonus-point performances. This log determines who advances to the knockout rounds. This round-robin format leads to the semi-finals and then the final.

Historically, the Western Province (DHL Stormers XXIII) have won the most titles in the Currie Cup. They have won 33 times but have not won a title since 2017.
