Springboks vs New Zealand: Preview and Predictions

The wait is over; Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry begins at Ellis Park as the Springboks take on a confident All Blacks side. Can the Boks end New Zealand’s winning tour run and strike first in this epic four-Test battle?

Few fixtures in world rugby carry the weight of a Springboks versus New Zealand clash. The two nations have been at the centre of some of rugby’s greatest matches for more than a century, with the rivalry producing World Cup finals, iconic moments and countless battles between two of the sport’s most successful teams. The 2026 edition is set to add another chapter to that history as the Springboks and All Blacks meet at Ellis Park in the opening Test of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour.

Both sides head into the first Test in winning form. The Springboks have won their last five matches, while New Zealand have also been building momentum. The All Blacks have already made a statement on their tour of South Africa, beating all three provincial sides they have faced so far: the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls. Their latest victory was particularly impressive, with New Zealand scoring eight tries to beat the Bulls 50-19 at Loftus Versfeld.

Now, however, the stakes are considerably higher. The warm-up matches are over, and the All Blacks face the reigning world champions in a Test match that could set the tone for the rest of this historic tour.

Why This Match Matters So Much

The Springboks versus All Blacks rivalry needs little introduction. South Africa and New Zealand are two of the most decorated nations in international rugby. Their meetings have regularly produced some of the highest-quality Test rugby in the world.

This particular series has an added sense of occasion. New Zealand are touring South Africa for the first time in 30 years, with the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour featuring four provincial matches and four Tests between the two sides.

For the Springboks, this is another opportunity to underline their status as the team to beat in international rugby. South Africa have won the last four meetings between the teams, including a famous 12-11 victory over New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final.

New Zealand, meanwhile, will believe their performances on tour have given them the ideal preparation. Wins over the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls have allowed the All Blacks to test their combinations and build confidence before facing the Springboks. But beating South Africa is a very different challenge.

Tactical Overview

The biggest tactical battle could come down to tempo versus physicality.

New Zealand have shown on tour that they want to play an attacking brand of rugby. Their ability to move the ball quickly, attack from broken play, and create opportunities out wide can put enormous pressure on defensive systems.

The All Blacks will also need to find ways of disrupting the Springboks’ set-piece dominance. South Africa’s scrum, maul, and physical defence have become defining features of their game, particularly in big Test matches.

The Springboks are unlikely to simply try to outmuscle New Zealand, though. Rassie Erasmus has developed a side capable of changing its approach depending on the opposition. South Africa can kick accurately, compete aggressively at the breakdown and use their powerful forwards to gain territory before bringing their attacking backs into the game.

One of the most intriguing battles will therefore be around territory and possession. If New Zealand can force the Springboks into defending for long periods, their attacking players could find opportunities. If South Africa can control the field position and win the set-piece battle, the All Blacks could be forced to defend deep.

There is also an interesting tactical subplot around match tempo. New Zealand have emphasised their desire to play fast, while South Africa have been known to slow games down.

Prediction

The All Blacks have been impressive on their South African tour so far beating the Stormers, Sharks, and Bulls. This has shown that New Zealand are capable of handling the conditions and travelling well. Their 50-19 victory over the Bulls demonstrated just how dangerous they can be with ball in hand.

But this is the match that truly matters.

The Springboks have home advantage, arrive on a five-match winning streak, and have an outstanding recent record against New Zealand. More importantly, South Africa have repeatedly shown that they can find a way to win when the pressure is at its highest.

New Zealand should make this competitive, particularly if they can maintain the attacking tempo they have shown throughout the tour. But with the Ellis Park crowd behind them and the physical demands of a Test match likely to favour the Springboks, South Africa gets the nod to win the opening Test.

Prediction: Springboks to win
