Sekhukhune United vs Orlando Pirates
MTN8 semi-final, first leg
Saturday, 22 August 2026 | Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane | 15:00
Orlando Pirates are chasing a fifth consecutive MTN8 title, while Sekhukhune are looking to upset the tournament’s dominant side and put themselves in a strong position before the second leg in Soweto.
What is at stake?
For Orlando Pirates, this is about continuing an extraordinary MTN8 dynasty. The Buccaneers have won the competition for the past four seasons and are now two matches away from a record-extending fifth straight crown. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has made it clear that retaining the trophy is a major objective.
Sekhukhune, meanwhile, has a huge opportunity to reach the MTN8 final and claim a major scalp. They come into the tie after a dramatic 4-3 extra-time victory over AmaZulu in the quarterfinals, while Pirates defeated Durban City 2-1 after extra time.
The fixture also begins an unusual three-game sequence between the sides in just eight days. After Saturday’s semi-final first leg, they meet in a Betway Premiership fixture before the MTN8 return leg on 29 August.
That makes the first leg particularly important. Sekhukhune will want to take an advantage to Orlando Stadium, while Pirates will be happy to avoid a damaging defeat and keep the tie under control.

Team news
Sekhukhune head coach Cedric Kaze has a significant selection problem at full-back. The coach has confirmed that Vuyo Letlapa and Tshepo Mashiloane are unavailable, leaving Babina Noko without both of their preferred starting full-backs.
That defensive disruption could be crucial against a Pirates side with considerable attacking quality. Kaze will need to find a solution that prevents the visitors from exploiting the wide areas while maintaining Sekhukhune’s defensive structure.
Despite the absences, Sekhukhune have plenty of confidence after their 4-3 extra-time triumph over AmaZulu. Bright Ndlovu has already scored in the league this season and also found the net in the MTN8 quarter-final.
Pirates appear to have a more settled side heading into the match. Sipho Chaine is expected to continue in goal, with Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema likely to form the central defensive partnership. Kamogelo Sebelebele and Deon Hotto are expected to operate at full-back.
In midfield, Camren Dansin has impressed in the early weeks of the season, while Thapelo Mokobodi is also pushing for a starting role. Patrick Maswanganyi is expected to operate behind the striker, with Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi providing attacking width.
Players to watch
Patrick Maswanganyi – Orlando Pirates
Maswanganyi could be one of the most influential players on the pitch. The attacking midfielder scored from the penalty spot in Pirates’ MTN8 quarter-final victory and possesses the creativity to unlock a compact Sekhukhune defence.
His ability to find pockets of space between midfield and defence could be particularly important if Sekhukhune sit deep.
Oswin Appollis – Orlando Pirates
Appollis gives Pirates pace, direct running and the ability to attack defenders one-on-one. With Sekhukhune missing key full-backs, the winger could have an opportunity to make a major impact from the flank.
Tshepang Moremi – Orlando Pirates
Moremi is another player who can stretch the home defence. His movement from the left can create space for Maswanganyi and Appollis, while his ability to arrive in dangerous positions gives Pirates another route to goal.
Bright Ndlovu – Sekhukhune United
Ndlovu has already shown his importance to Kaze’s side this season. He scored in the league and then struck against AmaZulu in the MTN8 quarter-final. His finishing and movement could give Pirates’ defence plenty to think about.
Lehlogonolo Mojela – Sekhukhune United
Mojela’s pace and ability to run behind the defensive line could be vital for the hosts. Sekhukhune may not dominate possession, so their opportunities could come through quick transitions, making Mojela an important outlet.
The tactical battle
The biggest question will be whether Sekhukhune can turn their home advantage into pressure without leaving spaces for Pirates to exploit.
The Old Peter Mokaba Stadium’s relatively small pitch is something Pirates are aware of. Ouaddou has acknowledged that the away first leg requires a smart approach, particularly because his team will have the second leg at home.
Sekhukhune, meanwhile, have every reason to be aggressive. A home victory would put enormous pressure on Pirates heading into the return fixture.
The visitors’ biggest advantage is their experience of knockout football. Pirates have reached seven MTN8 semi-finals since 2012 and have progressed from every one of them.
Prediction
This should be a tight and tactical first leg. Sekhukhune’s home advantage and recent confidence make them dangerous, but their defensive absences are a major concern against a Pirates attack packed with pace and creativity.
Pirates are also likely to approach the match cautiously, knowing that the tie will be decided over two legs.
Prediction: Sekhukhune United 1-1 Orlando Pirates
A draw would represent a useful result for the defending champions, while Sekhukhune would still have every reason to believe they can cause an upset in the second leg. Bet on the MTN8 with Bet.co.za.
