Kaizer Chiefs come into the game with a perfect league record, while Sundowns arrive with momentum after a dramatic midweek victory over TS Galaxy.

What is at stake?

Although it is only the opening phase of the season, this fixture carries significant weight.

Chiefs have won both of their league matches so far and sit top of the early standings with six points and a five-goal difference. Their 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United on Wednesday was another positive step after the disappointment of their MTN8 quarter-final exit.

Sundowns, meanwhile, have played one league match and have three points after beating TS Galaxy 3-2. The Brazilians are among the title contenders, as they are in a campaign to bring the crown back home.

For Chiefs, victory would send an early message that they are ready to challenge the country’s strongest sides. For Sundowns, three points would immediately put pressure on the early leaders and underline their title ambitions.

Team news

Kaizer Chiefs

Amakhosi have had a demanding start to the campaign, playing three matches in six days at FNB Stadium. They lost 1-0 to Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter-final before responding with a 2-0 league victory over Sekhukhune United.

Luke Baartman and Mduduzi Shabalala scored in the second half against Sekhukhune, giving coach Fernando da Cruz an encouraging response from his attacking players.

There are no confirmed last-minute injury or suspension absences that can safely be stated ahead of the official line-ups. The Soweto giants have, however, undergone significant squad changes during the off-season, including the departures of players such as Gaston Sirino, Tashreeq Morris, Aden McCarhty and Fiacre Ntwari.

Mamelodi Sundowns

Sundowns also had to deal with a midweek league fixture, beating TS Galaxy 3-2 in Mbombela on Tuesday. Brayan León opened the scoring before Sphelele Mkhulise struck twice in an entertaining victory.

The Tshwane giants therefore arrive with confidence but will have had less recovery time than Chiefs before Saturday’s clash.

Their squad has also been reshaped, with Cassius Mailula, Antonio van Wyk, and others joining, while Peter Shalulile has departed.

As with Chiefs, the final starting XI and any late fitness decisions should be checked when the official team sheets are released.

Last five meetings

  • Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Kaizer Chiefs
  • Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns
  • Mamelodi Sundowns 1-2 Kaizer Chiefs
  • Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs
  • Kaizer Chiefs 0-4 Mamelodi Sundowns

The most recent two encounters have ended in draws, including the 1-1 meeting at Loftus Versfeld in May. The longer-term numbers still favour Sundowns, who have dominated this fixture over several seasons.

Players to watch

Mduduzi Shabalala – Kaizer Chiefs

Shabalala is one of the players Chiefs will rely on to unlock Sundowns’ midfield and defence. He scored in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune and has been identified as a key creative player for Chiefs going into the new campaign.

Luke Baartman – Kaizer Chiefs

Baartman’s late goal against Sekhukhune provides another reason for optimism. His movement and finishing could be important if Chiefs try to exploit space behind Sundowns’ defensive line.

Brayan León – Mamelodi Sundowns

León is arguably the biggest individual threat in the Sundowns attack. He scored against TS Galaxy and has already established himself as one of the club’s key forwards. Bet Central highlighted his movement, finishing and aerial ability as major strengths.

Sphelele Mkhulise – Mamelodi Sundowns

Mkhulise arrives at FNB Stadium in excellent form after scoring twice against TS Galaxy. His ability to arrive late in the box and influence the game from midfield makes him a player Chiefs will have to track closely.

Prediction

This could be a much tighter game than the 4-0 Sundowns victory in November 2024. Chiefs have home advantage, are unbeaten in their first two league games and will be buoyed by Wednesday’s win. Sundowns, however, have the deeper squad, greater attacking options and a strong recent record in this fixture.

The midweek games point to an intriguing tactical battle: Chiefs demonstrated defensive control against Sekhukhune, while Sundowns showed they can repeatedly hurt teams in transition and in the final third. You can place a bet on this fixture with Bet.co.za.

Prediction: Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 Mamelodi Sundowns
