Premier League 2026/27: Top Six Preview

The new season starts today, Friday 21 August, with champions Arsenal hosting Coventry City. The fascinating part is that five of the biggest challengers have changed managers, while Arsenal has retained Mikel Arteta and arrives as champions.

1. Arsenal vs Coventry

Arsenal start with the biggest advantage continuity. Arteta finally delivered the Premier League title last season, and the club has strengthened rather than rebuilt, most notably with Bruno Guimarães. Their 3–0 Community Shield win over Manchester City only increased the optimism.

Key question: Can Arsenal turn last season’s pragmatic title-winning football into sustained dominance?
Prediction: 1st

2. Manchester City vs Bournemouth

This is the great unknown. Pep Guardiola is gone and Enzo Maresca takes over, while City have also lost major midfield figures including Rodri and Bernardo Silva. The squad still contains Erling Haaland, but the transition could make them vulnerable early on.

Key question: How quickly can Maresca impose his ideas without City’s old midfield structure?
Prediction: 2nd

3. Newcastle vs Liverpool

Liverpool have arguably the biggest identity shift of the contenders. Andoni Iraola replaces the previous regime, while Mohamed Salah has departed. There is still enormous attacking and squad quality, but the combination of a new manager, personnel changes and injury concerns makes them harder to predict.

Their opening trip to Newcastle is an immediate test.

Key question: Can Liverpool replace Salah’s production and simultaneously adapt to Iraola’s football?
Prediction: 3rd

4. Fulham vs Chelsea

Chelsea might have the highest ceiling of the chasing pack. Xabi Alonso arrives with a reputation for sophisticated, flexible football, while Morgan Rogers has arrived for a club-record £117m fee. Crucially, Chelsea has no European football, giving them a potential physical advantage over their rivals.

Key question: Can Alonso turn Chelsea’s collection of talented players into a coherent, title-challenging team?
Prediction: 4th

5. Hull City vs Manchester United

United finished last season with genuine encouragement under Michael Carrick, who is now tasked with proving that improvement was more than a short-term bounce. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos strengthen the midfield, while the club will hope Carrick can finally give United some tactical stability.

The opening trip to promoted Hull City should offer three points, but the bigger test will be whether United can consistently beat the elite.

Key question: Is Carrick capable of turning promising form into a genuine top-four campaign?
Prediction: 5th

6. Brentford vs Tottenham

Tottenham are the hardest team in this group to rank. Roberto De Zerbi brings an attacking philosophy, but Spurs are coming off a disappointing campaign and have lost Cristian Romero. Marcos Senesi has arrived to add defensive stability.

If De Zerbi gets the attack clicking quickly, Spurs could surprise people. If not, the defensive transition could leave them exposed.

Key question: Can De Zerbi bring attacking identity without sacrificing defensive control?

Bet on the Premier League

The big theme is stability versus upheaval. Arsenal is the only one of these six entering the season without a new manager, while City, Liverpool, Chelsea, United and Spurs are all navigating significant changes. That makes Arsenal the logical starting favourite, but it also makes this one of the most difficult Premier League seasons to forecast in years.
