The 5 Greatest Coaches in the Springboks’ History

Who is the greatest Springbok coach of all time? From Kitch Christie’s perfect record to Rassie Erasmus’ World Cup dominance, we rank the five coaches who left their mark on South African rugby.

Great teams are nothing without their coaches. And the Springboks have had their fair share of great teams and even greater coaches. But the real question is, who is the best Springbok coach of all time?

Well, we’ve come to the conclusion that this is a hard question to answer. The masterminds behind winning streaks, Rugby World Cup titles, and high win rates only tell part of a story. The squad quality, strength of opposition, and the trophies won all need to be considered when answering who the greatest coaches in Springbok history are.

With this in mind, we’ve ranked the 5 greatest Springbok coaches based on their overall impact, achievements, and records in the world of South African rugby.

1. Rassie Erasmus

There are coaches, and then there’s Rassie Erasmus. He’s the man who united the nation and ensured that rugby’s flowing through the veins of all South Africans. So much so that he won the Order of Ikhamanga earlier this year. This is awarded to top South African achievers in the world of sport, arts, culture, and journalism.

Erasmus transformed South African rugby since he started coaching the Springboks. Through his leadership and selection of a legendary team, Erasmus helped the Boks win the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. But his success extends beyond the two World Cup wins.

Under Erasmus, the Springboks have won major Test series, defeated the British and Irish Lions in 2021, and claimed three Rugby Championship titles (2019, 2024, and 2025). This makes him a legend in his own right. His influence, however, moves beyond the role of a rugby coach.

He’s been instrumental in developing a highly adaptable Springbok squad, with tactical innovations such as the “Bomb Squad”. In July 2026, he became the most capped Springbok coach ever. This truly shows how he managed to make the Springboks who they are today.

2. Kitch Christie

Head coach from 1994 to 1995, Kitch Christie is a legend in his own right. Although he only coached for a short period of time, he made a huge impact. He redefined what it meant to play rugby in a democratic South Africa and ultimately united the nation with the 1995 Rugby World Cup win.

During his time as head coach, his record was extraordinary. The Springboks won 14 Tests straight with no defeats. But this wasn’t even his biggest achievement. He led the Springboks to their first Rugby World Cup title in 1995. The legendary photo of Francios Pienaar with Nelson Mandela after the final will forever be remembered thanks to the excellence of Christie’s coaching.

3. Jake White

The man, the legend, the coach Jake White built a powerful Springbok side between 2004 and 2007. Players such as John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, Percy Montgomery, and Schalk Burger are just a few names you might have heard of thanks to White.

He’s known for his 66.7% success rate and the 2004 Rugby Championship/Tri-Nations win. But his greatest achievement was winning the 2007 Rugby World Cup. This was the Springboks’ second World Cup win. It showed how they were capable of making it through a tournament unbeaten, maintaining performance under enormous pressure.

This second World Cup win pushed the Springboks into a leading position in the world of rugby. It also cemented White’s identity as a top-tier rugby tactician.

4. Nick Mallett

While Nick Mallett’s side never won a Rugby World Cup title, his record remains one of the most impressive in Springbok history. Between 1997 and 2000, Mallett’s side won 27 out of 38 Tests. This is an impressive 71%-win rate. Not only this, but between 1997 and 1998, the Springboks won 17 consecutive Tests. This was a world record at the time.

He combined traditional South African-style rugby with expansive attacking rugby that helped the Springboks win the 1998 Tri-Nations. They beat Australia and New Zealand during a period in which they were dominating. So, Mallett contributed to one of the most dominant streaks in Springbok history.

5. Jacques Nienaber

Working alongside Rassie Erasmus, Jacques Nienaber has been key in the Springboks’ golden era. He was head coach between 2020 and 2023, helping the Boks win their fourth Rugby World Cup. The Springboks produced a number of dramatic knockout victories. They beat New Zealand 12-11 in the final. It was here that they became the number one team in the world.

Nienaber’s defensive systems and tactical preparation were crucial in the Springboks’ success. Not only this, but under his coaching, they had a 69.2% win rate. All in all, his contribution during this period of time shouldn’t be overlooked.

So, Who’s the GOAT?

The Springboks have had some unbelievable coaches over the years. From Kitch Christie’s perfect record to Jacques Nienaber helping the Springboks win two Rugby World Cups, there is no shortage of great coaches. But only one can be the GOAT.

For us, there is no greater GOAT coach than Rassie Erasmus. He’s redefined what it means to be a Springbok and what it means to be a South African supporter of rugby. Erasmus is responsible for two back-to-back Rugby World Cups, a British & Irish Lions win, and multiple Rugby Championship titles.

And his story is not yet finished. With the Nations Championship expected to carry on in November, the upcoming Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, and the 2027 Rugby World Cup, there’s no shortage of excellence needed. There’s also no shortage of betting opportunities available. Bet on rugby now with bet.co.za.
