Very few rugby union rivalries stretch back over a century. Even fewer have produced as memorable Test matches as these two. Only one has met 30 times and lost 25 of those meetings to South Africa. Scotland versus the Springboks have produced unforgettable moments over the years filled with physicality and tactical battles.
While Scotland enjoyed early wins over South Africa, they have not won against the Springboks since 2010. Since 2010, these two sides have played nine times, with their most recent meeting being in 2024.
So, the question on everyone’s minds is: Can the Springboks keep up their winning streak? Or will Scotland be ready to take on the number one team in the world?
Ahead of Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland, we’re going to deep dive into the Springboks’ greatest wins over the Scottish side.
The History of Springboks vs Scotland
Dating back to 1906, the South African Scottish rivalry is over a century old. It began with Scotland defeating the Springboks 6-0. This match was historic for two reasons.
Firstly, it was the first time South African rugby toured overseas. Secondly, it’s remembered as the tour where the “Springbok” nickname was first adopted.
Since this first historic match, the power dynamics between these two teams have shifted. The Springboks have won 25 out of 30 encounters. The Scottish, on the other hand, have never won on South African soil, despite seven attempts.
South Africa 68-10 Scotland (1997)
Fresh off the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory, the Springboks achieved this historic win against Scotland in 1997. With a final score of 68-10, this marked a Springbok record win in a Test match. This score stands as the biggest winning margin in their rivalry as well as the largest Springbok score against Scotland.
Not only this, but it demonstrated South Africa’s rugby dominance during the 1990s. They overwhelmed Scotland with relentless forward dominance and a strong backline. Scotland, in response, was unable to keep up with this.
South Africa 55-6 Scotland (2014)
The Springboks put on a show for Scotland in 2014, winning 55-6. This match, held at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, was Scotland’s second biggest loss to the South African side.
Led by Captain Victor Matfield, the Springboks scored an astonishing eight tries. This was Handre Pollard’s debut match for the Springboks. He kicked five conversions and a penalty, making this a dream first Test.
Here, Scotland struggled to keep up with the intensity of the Boks. They managed two penalty kicks but fell short of tries. This performance showcased the Springboks at their best. They combined forward power with fast, clinical attacking rugby.
South Africa 32-15 Scotland (2024)
In the last match between these two sides, South Africa scored four tries as they beat Scotland 32-15 at Murrayfield. The Springboks took control in the second half with a composed and clinical performance.
South Africa’s powerful forwards, disciplined defence, and ability to capitalise on key moments proved decisive. That said, Scotland entered the match strong after their Six Nations campaign.
But the Springboks were stronger. This match extended their winning streak to nine consecutive Test wins over Scotland.
South Africa 34-16 Scotland (2015 Rugby World Cup)
After South Africa’s loss against Japan in their opening match, this pool game came with enormous pressure. They needed a win, and they delivered just that.
The Springboks dominated territory and possession. They applied as much pressure as possible and scored a try within the first 12 minutes. They went on to score two more tries, one by Bryan Habana. In the end, the Boks went on to the semi-finals and overall came in third place in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
South Africa 30-15 Scotland (2021)
The Springboks claimed their 7th victory in a row against Scotland in their 2021 30-15 win. This marked yet another win for the South African side at Murrayfield, Edinburgh. Although the home side remained in contention for the entirety of the match, the Boks dominated in set-pieces and around the breakdown.
So, while Scotland showed flashes of attacking promise, their ill-discipline let them down. This allowed the Springboks to build and protect their lead through penalties. Here, Makazole Mapimpi scored two tries, while Eben Etzebeth earned Man of the Match after his phenomenal performance.
Another Chapter Awaits This Saturday
On Saturday, 11 July, the Springboks take on Scotland in Round 2 of the Nations Championship at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria. Scotland enters this match on a high after a 50-40 win against France. The Springboks enter this match after a 45-21 domination over England. This sets both sides on even grounding.
South Africa will be looking for their 10th consecutive win. Scotland will be chasing their first-ever Test victory on South African soil. They will also be chasing their first win in 16 years against the Springboks. So, expect this match to be a nail-biter.
