Nigeria head into their final WAFCON Group C match knowing that there is still work to be done against Egypt. The defending champions recovered from a difficult start to the tournament, but qualification remains on the line as Zambia continue to challenge for second place. 

Egypt’s return to the continental finals has been a punishing one. They opened with a 6–0 defeat to Zambia before losing 3–1 to Malawi, leaving them bottom of the group without a point and with nine goals conceded. Their elimination has already been confirmed, although they can still influence which team joins Malawi in the quarterfinals. 

Nigeria’s campaign has been less convincing than many expected. A 3–2 opening defeat against Malawi immediately placed the champions under pressure, with the Super Falcons punished for a disjointed defensive performance. They responded by beating Zambia 1–0, however, showing much more control and discipline against a team that had scored six in its previous outing. 

That victory returned Nigeria to second place in the 2026 WAFCON standings, but it didn’t finish the job. A win over Egypt will be the clearest route into the last eight, while anything less could leave the Super Falcons dependent on the outcome of Malawi’s match against Zambia.

Nigeria have had to work much harder in this year’s WAFCON campaign than anticipated, but the response against Zambia offered a reminder of their ability to manage important matches. Egypt may play with greater freedom now that their qualification hopes are over, yet the gap in experience and individual quality remains considerable.
