Match Preview

Nigeria’s women’s team arrives to WAFCON this year with a reputation to live up to, chasing their 11th record-extending win. They are currently the most well-decorated team in the history of the tournament and are one of the most intimidating nations to go up against. Malawi, on the other hand, is less of a threat. There is no doubt the team has many talented players, but it is difficult to ignore Nigeria’s dominance.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have one of the most impressive histories in Women’s AFCON and other competitive series. Apart from having 10 titles to their name, the Super Falcons have scored two or more goals in eight of their last 10 matches and have won all their recent games apart from one loss against Cameroon in 2024. The 2025 title winners ended last year’s final with a 3–2 win against hosts Morocco.

Despite being the lowest-ranked nation in this year’s tournament according to FIFA official rankings, the Scorchers make history for Malawi by entering WAFCON for the first time. Across their 10 most recent matches, they lost six, had two draws, and two victories. Their most impressive win was against Lesotho earlier this year with a staggering 8–1 victory. While the odds are clearly stacked against them when compared to Nigeria, Malawi will be coming into the competition with one goal. They want to make an impression and show the world that they deserve to be there.

Expect Nigeria’s game plan to revolve around controlling possession and using strong attack players like Asisat Oshoala or their captain Rasheedat Ajibade. They will be looking to wear Malawi’s defence down to get as many goals as possible. Malawi will struggle to make any game-altering moves, but the Chawinga sisters may make life a little less comfortable for the opposition.

Head-to-Head

Malawi and Nigeria have faced each other only twice during the qualifying matches for the 2014 Africa Women’s Championship with one draw (1–1) and one win (2–0) for Nigeria. Considering this and the recent form of each team, Nigeria remains the favourite.

Key Betting Tips

  • Nigeria to Win
  • Over 2.5 Goals
  • Both Teams to Score – No
  • Correct Score Prediction: Nigeria 3–0 Malawi

Nigeria to Win

With ten WAFCON titles to their name already, Nigeria will be coming into this match with full confidence against Malawi’s Scorchers. It’s almost a guaranteed victory for the defending champions, so backing them for a win by two or more goals is likely the highest value bet.

Prediction

Unfortunately for Malawi, who compete in WAFCON for the very first time, they are being put up against the tournament’s most impressive team. With ten titles (and a possible 11th on the way) and a superior team composition, the Super Falcons should take the win comfortably. Place your bets at Bet.co.za
