Formula 1 heads to Mexico City this weekend for Round 19 of the 2026 season, and we could be about to witness a historic moment in the championship.

Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez with a 123-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell after winning the United States Grand Prix in Austin. With just five rounds remaining, Antonelli has a chance to wrap up the Drivers’ Championship in Mexico and become the youngest World Champion in F1 history, taking that record from Sebastian Vettel. All he needs to do is finish P9 or higher, and the deal is sealed.

But there’s plenty more to watch this weekend. Max Verstappen has won five of the last eight races in Mexico and will be looking to challenge for another victory, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc arrives after finishing runner-up in Austin. And, of course, Sergio Pérez will be racing in front of his home crowd after confirming a contract extension with Cadillac that will keep him with the team until at least 2029.

Mexico City also presents a unique challenge for the teams. The circuit sits more than 2,000 metres above sea level, affecting aerodynamic performance and cooling while making the cars behave differently from how they do at most other tracks. With a large portion of the circuit also receiving new asphalt, teams have plenty to work through before Sunday’s race.

Let’s take a closer look at the schedule, key storylines, drivers to watch and our Mexico City Grand Prix predictions.

Previous Race: What Happened at the United States Grand Prix?

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the championship with an impressive victory at the United States Grand Prix last weekend.

The Mercedes driver started from pole position and held off his rivals to claim his ninth Grand Prix win of the season. He controlled the race with a strong one-stop strategy, eventually finishing 13.078 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, who took second place for Ferrari.

Max Verstappen completed the podium in third, while Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and Lando Norris fifth. George Russell could only manage eighth after a difficult race, losing more ground to his teammate in the championship.

The result leaves Antonelli on 365 points, with Russell on 242 and Hamilton on 241. Verstappen has moved up to 236 points, while Leclerc sits on 233.

That puts Antonelli in a commanding position heading into Mexico. With a comfortable lead and a car that has delivered throughout the season, the championship is now firmly within his reach.

Key Storylines and Considerations Heading Into the Weekend

Kimi Antonelli Will Almost Certainly Win the Drivers’ Championship

Antonelli has been the standout driver of the 2026 season, winning nine Grands Prix and building a 123-point advantage over Russell. He has also been remarkably consistent, rarely finishing outside the top positions.

The Italian now has his first opportunity to secure the title. A top nine finish in Mexico would be enough to make him World Champion, regardless of what Russell or Hamilton do. If Antonelli finishes 10th, he can still clinch the title provided Russell doesn’t win. He could also become champion without scoring if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the race.

If he gets the job done, Antonelli will become the youngest World Champion in F1 history at just 20 years old.

Of course, there is still the small matter of the race itself. Verstappen has a strong record at this circuit, Ferrari has shown encouraging pace, and Russell will be determined to keep his championship hopes alive.

But Antonelli doesn’t need to take unnecessary risks. A solid points finish could be enough to make history.

The High-Altitude Challenge at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez

Mexico City is one of the most technically interesting circuits on the F1 calendar, largely because of its altitude.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits around 2,285 metres above sea level, where the thinner air reduces aerodynamic downforce and makes cooling more difficult. This forces teams to rethink their setups, even though the circuit’s long straights might normally favour lower-drag configurations.

The cars need enough downforce to remain stable through the corners, but the altitude means the aerodynamic effect of even large wings is reduced. Teams also have to pay close attention to cooling, as the thinner air makes it harder to manage temperatures across the car’s components.

The circuit itself offers a mix of heavy braking zones, slower technical corners and long straights. Turn 1 is an important overtaking opportunity, while the stadium section provides one of the most recognisable backdrops in Formula 1.

Drivers will need to find confidence under braking and make the most of the available grip, particularly during the early sessions when the track is still gaining rubber. The unusual conditions could also make it harder to predict which teams will have the strongest race pace.

Sergio Pérez Announces Contract Extension with Cadillac

There’s some big news ahead of Pérez’s home Grand Prix. Cadillac has confirmed that the Mexican driver has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the American team until at least 2029. The announcement came on Wednesday, just days before his home race in Mexico City.

Pérez joined Cadillac ahead of its F1 debut in 2026 and has committed to the project as the team looks to establish itself and become more competitive. For Cadillac, keeping an experienced driver like Pérez is an important step. The six-time Grand Prix winner has raced for several teams throughout his career, including Sauber, McLaren, Force India, Racing Point and Red Bull.

That experience and technical feedback will be valuable as Cadillac continues developing its car and building its operation.

The timing is particularly special, too. Pérez is set to make his 300th Grand Prix start in front of his home fans this weekend, giving him another reason to make it a memorable race.

Drivers to Watch

Kimi Antonelli

After winning in Austin, the Mercedes driver has a 123-point lead over Russell and could secure the championship with a top nine finish in Mexico. He has been one of the most consistent drivers on the grid and has already collected nine Grand Prix victories in 2026.

Last year, Antonelli finished sixth in Mexico, so he has experience of the circuit, even if the current cars present a different challenge.

With Mercedes producing such a strong package this season, he should have a good chance of finishing near the front again. The main question is whether he can keep his focus on the race while knowing that the biggest prize is within reach.

Max Verstappen

The Red Bull driver has won five of the last eight Mexican Grands Prix, including three consecutive victories from 2021 to 2023. He knows what it takes to succeed at this circuit, and the combination of long straights and technical corners has suited him well in the past.

He finished third in Austin after winning in Malaysia and Singapore, so he remains a serious threat at the front.

If Red Bull gets the balance right in the thinner air, Verstappen could be in a strong position to challenge Antonelli and potentially take another win.

Charles Leclerc

Leclerc is also worth keeping an eye on after another strong result in Austin.

The Ferrari driver finished second behind Antonelli and has now taken runner-up finishes in two consecutive Grand Prix. He also finished second in Mexico last year, showing that Ferrari can be competitive around this circuit.

Race Winner

Max Verstappen

The Red Bull driver has a superb record at this circuit, with five wins in the last eight races. He has also looked much more competitive in recent weeks, taking victories in Malaysia and Singapore before finishing third in Austin.

Mexico’s high altitude presents a unique challenge, but Verstappen has consistently performed well here. His experience and confidence at the circuit could give him an advantage, especially if Red Bull finds a setup that works well through the technical sections.

Points Finish – Kimi Antonelli

The Mercedes driver has been remarkably consistent throughout the season, and his victory in Austin underlined just how competitive the W17 remains. Even if he doesn’t have the pace to win in Mexico, he should have a strong chance of finishing in the points. After all, he just needs two points to get the win.
