WAFCON World Cup Qualifier 2 Preview: South Africa vs Nigeria

Match Preview 

The WAFCON 2026 title may now be out of reach for South Africa and Nigeria, but there is still a World Cup opportunity on the table. The quarterfinal losers meet in these final qualification play-offs, with the winners earning their spot in the 2027 Women’s World Cup. 

South Africa will be frustrated with how their campaign has unfolded thus far. Banyana Banyana struggled during the group stages, losing to Tanzania, drawing with Ivory Coast and narrowly beating Burkina Faso before eventually finishing second in Group B. They’d hoped to bounce back, but their quarterfinal brought another tough challenge against hosts Morocco, where they were knocked out following a 2–1 defeat. 

Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign has been just as unpredictable. The defending champions started with a defeat to Malawi before responding with wins over Zambia and Egypt. That recovery made them favourites against Cameroon in the quarterfinals, but the Super Falcons were stunned 1–0 and saw their title defence come to an early end. 

Neither former champion has performed quite as well as expected at this tournament, which makes this a difficult one to call. Nigeria have shown more attacking power at their best, while South Africa have enough experience to make sure this is far from straightforward.

Recent history gives Nigeria the advantage. The Super Falcons beat South Africa 2–1 in the previous WAFCON semifinal in 2025. They also lead against South Africa just slightly in their previous games, having five wins against South Africa’s four. There isn’t too much separating them, though, so it’s still a close call.
