WAFCON Third-Place Preview: Morocco vs Algeria

The WAFCON 2026 final is already set with Cameroon and Malawi fighting for the trophy on Sunday. But before then, Morocco and Algeria have one final opportunity to leave the tournament with the bronze when they meet in Saturday’s third-place match. While it isn’t the final they had hoped for, both teams will still have high hopes for a solid match to end their campaigns.  

Morocco came agonisingly close to reaching a third consecutive final. Their semifinal against Cameroon remained goalless through 120 minutes, with the Atlas Lionesses even missing a late extra-time penalty before Cameroon eventually won the penalty shootout 3–1. 

Despite that disappointment, Morocco have put together an impressive tournament this far. They topped Group A before beating South Africa in the quarterfinals. Their defence has been incredibly difficult to break down, and playing at home gives them another advantage heading into their final appearance. 

Algeria’s historic campaign also came to an end in the semifinals, where Malawi handed them a 3–1 defeat. It was a disappointing result for a side that had previously looked so solid, but reaching a first WAFCON semifinal and qualifying for their first Women’s World Cup still makes this a tournament to remember. 

It’s safe to say that both teams are in good shape and can challenge them for the victory today. While the hosts might seem to have a bit more of an advantage, Algeria could still put up a fight and take the win. It’s anyone’s game today.
