With the playoffs fast approaching, every point counts with teams jockeying for position in the Race to the Eight. The Sharks, who face Edinburgh in the Scottish capital on Friday night, are all but out of the hunt, but the other South African sides are firmly in the playoff picture.
Round 16’s headlining clash in the Mother City will be followed by a battle between the Lions and Connacht in Johannesburg and a showdown between the Bulls and the Scarlets in Llanelli.
Cardiff v Ospreys
Friday, 24 April – 20:00
Cardiff are one of the teams who’ll be feeling the pressure this week.
Last weekend’s 28-24 away win over the Scarlets would’ve served as a momentary pressure release as it ended a three-match losing run in all competitions and kept them in the top half of the table. However, it will count for little if they lose this derby at home.
The Ospreys won the January clash between the two Welsh rivals 33-22, and arrested a three-match losing streak of their own with a four-point victory over the Sharks last weekend. With that timely confidence booster and the fact that they’re out of the playoff race, the Ospreys have nothing to lose and will throw the kitchen sink at Cardiff.
It’s all about accuracy and composure for Cardiff if they want to consolidate their place in the top eight, and they should do just that.
Prediction: Cardiff by 5.
Suggested Bet: Ospreys +6 at 1.90.
Edinburgh v Sharks
Friday, 24 April – 20:45
With their playoff hopes all but dashed by last weekend’s 21-17 loss to the Ospreys, the Sharks have to find their ‘why’ this week.
One place behind the Sharks in 12th, Edinburgh are also out of playoff contention but will have the support of their home fans as their fuel. What will be the Durbanites’ driving force?
That’s step one for JP Pietersen to figure out in order to pull the best out of his players, who feel aggrieved after what some feel were suspicious circumstances that led to uncontested scrums last weekend.
More backline injuries rubbed salt in their wounds and further complicated things for the Sharks, as does a six-day turnaround, and yet, this is a game they could and should win.
Edinburgh only barely got past Zebre last weekend, eking out a one-point win to snap a four-game losing streak. Moreover, the Sharks have won two of the three meetings between the sides in the Scottish capital.
Thus, if they’re not ‘robbed’ of one of their most powerful weapons – the scrum – this time around, they should get over the line.
Prediction: Sharks by 2.
Suggested Bet: Edinburgh +5 at 2.00.
Zebre v Dragons
Friday, 24 April – 20:45
Before the top-of-the-table showdown on South African soil, we have the basement battle in Parma.
Zebre are seven points behind the Dragons in last place, so if they want to avoid the wooden spoon, they need to finish strong, starting with a win in this one.
The Italians will have added motivation as this is a repeat of the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-final between the teams at the same venue two weeks ago, which the Dragons won 35-32.
Given that Zebre almost triumphed in Edinburgh last weekend and that the Dragons’ focus is on next weekend’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Montpellier in France, Zebre should get revenge.
Prediction: Zebre by 6.
Suggested Bet: Dragons +9 at 1.90.
Stormers v Glasgow Warriors
Saturday, 25 April – 13:45
The heat is on in Cape Town where the Stormers will be determined to rediscover their clinical edge and capitalise on home-ground advantage to usurp their visitors at the top of the log.
With emotions running high in their first game since the passing of beloved team manager Christopher “Chippie” Solomon, the Capetonians imploded last weekend and missed a golden opportunity to regain top spot by suffering a shock 33-24 loss to Connacht.
Trailing Glasgow by four points, it’s vital for John Dobson’s men to not only regain rhythm on attack but also shore up the holes in their defence to ensure they bounce back and send Glasgow home empty handed.
With world-class playmakers like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse and Warrick Gelant, one can understand why the Capetonians chance their arm so much. Their flair for the spectacular is instinctive and has seen them score some cracking tries, but it’s also cost them dearly, as it did last weekend.
Franco Smith’s side endured a 54-12 hammering at Ellis Park last weekend but are expected to welcome back some key players. For the Stormers, as long as they stick to the basics and don’t force things, they should get the better of Glasgow.
Prediction: Stormers by 9.
Suggested Bet: Stormers -7 at 1.90.
Lions v Connacht
Saturday, 25 April – 16:00
The two form teams of the competition collide in what should be a humdinger on the Highveld.
The Lions have won five in a row to climb up to fourth place, while Connacht’s six-match winning streak has seen them scratch and claw their way to ninth position.
The two clubs are similar in that they have a number of international-calibre players who don’t currently play Test rugby, giving them sustained strength and continuity, whereas superstar-laden teams struggle when their leading players are on national duty.
Few teams can keep up with the Lions when they’re at their attacking best at altitude, as they are at the moment. The Pride are the joint-top try-scorers along with neighbours the Bulls with 65 five-pointers, eight of which came in their 42-point walloping of the Warriors last weekend.
Connacht have only scored 51 tries this season, but with their current hot streak and the fact that they’ve tasted victory at Ellis Park before, back in 2022 when they triumphed 33-30, they’ll fancy their chances.
The real key takeaway from the Lions’ win last weekend wasn’t their slick offense, but rather their stern defence, and it’s that growing strength that should see them continue their winning ways and dent Connacht’s playoff hopes.
Prediction: Lions by 12.
Suggested Bet: Connacht +13 at 1.90.
Munster v Ulster
Saturday, 25 April – 18:30
Both of these teams have a 9-6 record, with one extra bonus point placing Ulster one spot above Munster in fifth position.
Munster have momentum on their side after their dominant 45-15 away win over Benetton last weekend, whereas Ulster fell 29-21 to Leinster at home.
Ulster, on the other hand, could have a psychological advantage given they were emphatic 28-3 winners in the sides’ earlier game this season.
Given that Munster generally pull through against them at home and that Ulster have a Challenge Cup semi-final against the Exeter Chiefs next weekend, the visitors may well field a mix-and-match side.
If they do, Munster’s winning margin should increase to two scores.
Prediction: Munster by 10.
Suggested Bet: Ulster +19 at 1.90.
Benetton v Leinster
Saturday, 25 April – 20:45
With Benetton out of playoff contention down in 13th place and coming off a 30-point mauling by Munster at home, you’d think the last team they’d want to play this week is Leinster.
However, the Irish giants are hosting Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup next weekend, so there’s a good chance they’ll rest their star players this weekend.
This is an important game for them as well, as they could move into the top two, and they have the depth to successfully complete their Italian job.
Prediction: Leinster by 8.
Suggested Bet: Benetton +9 at 1.90.
Scarlets v Bulls
Saturday, 25 April – 20:45
Even though the Bulls are in eighth place, title challengers should pay close attention to the men from Pretoria as they have that look about them.
They’ve tapped into their DNA and destroyed the Dragons 47-7 with their no-nonsense power game last weekend to make it three wins on the bounce in the URC. Having traded sizzle and style for strength and substance, they’re looking like a mean machine that’ll take some stopping.
Considering that the Scarlets are in lowly 14th spot, have won just one of their last six games and are coming off a 28-24 home loss to Cardiff, the Bulls should overpower them and bank their first win in Llanelli.
Prediction: Bulls by 10.
Suggested Bet: Scarlets +11 at 1.90.
