The Belgian coach recently finalised his squad for the tournament, with six players being informed at the last minute that they would not be part of the travelling contingent to the global showpiece.
Among those left out were Kaizer Chiefs players Brandon Petersen, Thabiso Monyane and Lebohang Maboe, along with Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, Durban City youngster Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thapelo Morena.
According to reports, Broos informed the affected players during the team’s final dinner before departure. Zuma feels the timing of the announcement was unfortunate, particularly given the players’ commitment throughout the preparation period and their hopes of making the final squad.
The former Bafana Bafana and FC Copenhagen star said he sympathised with the omitted players and suggested that the coaching staff likely knew their final selections well before making the announcement.
“It was not nice for the six guys, the way they found out,” Zuma told Sowetan.
“I really felt sorry for them, but at the same time, this is the national team. We all come together with one objective, which is to serve the country and represent the national team.”
While acknowledging that difficult decisions are an unavoidable part of football, Zuma stressed that clear and timely communication is crucial when dealing with players who have dedicated themselves to the national cause.
“They should have been informed earlier. I’m sure the coaching staff already knew a few days before who would be included in the final squad. I’m not criticising anyone, but the situation could have been handled much better. In the end, those players made a sacrifice for the team,” he added.
Despite the debate surrounding the final squad selection, focus now shifts to Bafana’s World Cup campaign.
South Africa will begin their Group A campaign against Mexico on 11 June before facing the Czech Republic. Broos’ side will then conclude the group stage against South Korea as they aim to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
