WAFCON: Ghana vs Cape Verde – Prediction & Betting Tips

WAFCON 2026 shifts to the first matches of Group D, with Ghana and Cape Verde making their debut at Moulay Rachid Stadium. Ghana comes in as the clear favourite, but after some surprising victories in this year’s tournament so far, Cape Verde may emerge as strong competition.

Match Preview

If we’ve learned anything from recent matches in this year’s edition of WAFCON, it’s that anything can happen. Yesterday gave us an unbelievable match with a superb 6–0 victory for Zambia over Egypt. Then added on with an extra surprising defeat for Nigeria after the underdogs, Malawi, clinched the win with 3–2.

Today, the Black Queens from Ghana arrive with plenty to prove and build on after finishing third in last year’s tournament. Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has brought in a renewed structure for the squad and hopes to lead the team toward 2027 FIFA qualification and a first WAFCON win. Their most recent showing came in the form of a 4–0 win against Malawi in friendlies. They showed both a decent defence and attack strategy, which seems especially impressive now considering what Malawi was able to achieve against the reigning champions.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks are making their WAFCON tournament debut this year after their run up to qualifying. There will be confidence in the women’s team after the impressive showing from the Cape Verde men’s team at the FIFA world cup this year. However, after their recent run of form, the Blue Sharks aren’t exactly at peak performance. In their last six games, they’ve only won one game against Mali, had one draw, and four losses. The question is, will their recent form have any effect on today’s match?

The obvious expectation is that Ghana will start off with stronger possession and maintain it throughout the game to bring in important goals. That said, favourites in this tournament so far haven’t been as dominant as expected, so Cape Verde shouldn’t be written off too quickly.

Ghana and Cape Verde women’s national teams have not met in any competitive fixtures in the past, so this will be their first meeting. With no competitive history to lean on, the best guide to betting on these teams is their current form and recent match history.

Both Teams to Score – Yes

Recent results in WAFCON this year show that backing the favourites isn’t a straightforward option. While Ghana seems to be in superior form, it’s worth leaving some room for Cape Verde to show their skill in their debut. Expect both teams to go back and forth in an attempt to make a good impression.

Prediction

Ghana’s play style tends to be aggressive enough to make opponents fall into the trap of making errors, which Ghana can then take advantage of. Cape Verde, on the other hand, tend to feel pressure like that more, and their defence could struggle to keep up. That said, underdogs have been taking the tournament by storm thus far, so don’t count them out just yet when you place your bets on Bet.co.za

Prediction: Ghana 2–1 Cape Verde
