Bafana showed resilience after their disappointing opening defeat to Mexico, overcoming suspensions and an early setback to earn a crucial point and remain in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
Both teams came into the match desperate for a result following opening-game losses, but it was Czechia who started brighter and took an early lead. Adam Hlozek kept the ball in play near the byline before cutting it back to Alexandr Sojka, who cleverly teed up Michal Sadilek to fire past Ronwen Williams.
South Africa, missing two players due to suspensions following red cards against Mexico, struggled to cope with Czechia’s intensity in the opening half. Although Hugo Broos’ side gradually gained more possession, they found it difficult to create clear-cut chances as the Europeans pressed aggressively.
Czechia continued to threaten after the break. Vladimir Darida saw his effort blocked by Ime Okon, while Patrik Schick headed straight at Williams as Bafana searched for a route back into the contest.
Their first real opportunity came with 20 minutes remaining when Evidence Makgopa tested goalkeeper Matej Kovar with a low strike. The chance sparked renewed belief, and South Africa were soon handed a lifeline after Pavel Sulc was penalised for handling the ball inside the box.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly buried the penalty into the bottom-left corner, sending Kovar the wrong way and restoring parity.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Lukas Provod coming closest for Czechia when he fired narrowly wide. However, neither side could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared.
The result leaves Group A finely poised heading into the final round of fixtures. South Africa must beat South Korea to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout rounds, while Czechia face a must-win clash against co-hosts Mexico.
