Mamelodi Sundowns target MTN8 success as Polokwane City stands in their way

The clash will mark Sundowns’ first competitive outing of the new season after their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants was postponed last weekend.

Polokwane City, meanwhile, arrive in Tshwane with confidence after opening their league campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Richards Bay at uMhlathuze Stadium last Sunday.

Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says the Brazilians are determined to end their recent struggles in domestic cup competitions, having last lifted the MTN8 trophy in 2021.

“To be honest, we haven’t been doing well, especially in local tournaments,” Modiba admitted.

“We’ve been losing finals and semi-finals, but this season we want to do better than last season.

“So hopefully this season we can compete in the final and give ourselves a chance to lift the trophy.”

Despite Sundowns’ pedigree, Polokwane City are backing themselves to spring a surprise. Veteran striker Puleng Marema believes Rise and Shine have what it takes to knock out the Tshwane giants.

“They haven’t won this trophy for five years, so I think now they really want it,” said the 35-year-old.

“But we also want to progress. We know it’s not going to be easy, but I think the boys are ready and we can’t wait to play against them on Saturday.”

Sundowns will be without Colombian forward Brayan León, who serves a suspension after accumulating four yellow cards last season.

Kick-off at Lucas Moripe Stadium is scheduled for 18:00, with a place in the MTN8 semi-finals up for grabs.
