PREVIEW: AmaZulu vs Orlando Pirates – Team News, & More

AmaZulu host defending champions Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, in a heavyweight Betway Premiership clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 20: Kamogelo Sebelebele of the Orlando Pirates celebrates his goal with Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa during the Betway Premiership match between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium on August 20, 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The kick-off is scheduled for 19:30. Both sides opened the new league campaign with victories, making this an early test of their title ambitions.

Team news

AmaZulu began the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch, while Pirates opened their title defence with a convincing 2-0 win against newly promoted Milford FC. Oswin Appollis scored in that victory, with Tshepang Moremi also on target.

Orlando Pirates have undergone some squad changes during the off-season. Among their departures are Relebohile Mofokeng, who completed a move to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise

AmaZulu will be looking to build on their opening-round win, but they face a Pirates side that also had the benefit of a competitive MTN8 match against Durban City just four days before this fixture. Pirates won that encounter 2-1 after extra time.

What’s at stake?

There is plenty at stake despite this being only the second league match of the season.

For Pirates, this is another opportunity to show that last season’s championship-winning form has carried into the new campaign. The Buccaneers are defending the Betway Premiership title after completing a domestic treble in 2025/26.

For AmaZulu, beating the champions would send an early statement that they can challenge for a top-four position and potentially push into the CAF qualification conversation. Pre-season projections have identified AmaZulu among the sides capable of competing for the upper end of the table.

With both teams sitting on three points after Matchday 1, the winner will move to six points and gain an important early advantage.

Head-to-head

The historical numbers strongly favour Pirates. Across 39 meetings since 2007, AmaZulu have won three, Orlando Pirates have won 20, while 16 matches have ended in draws.

The recent record is even more favourable to the Buccaneers: Pirates have gone unbeaten in their last 20 meetings with AmaZulu, recording 12 wins and eight draws.

Their most recent league meeting in April ended in a 3-0 Pirates victory, while another recent meeting saw Pirates win 2-0.

Players to watch

Oswin Appollis — Orlando Pirates

Appollis is an obvious threat after scoring in Pirates’ 2-0 opening-day win over Milford. His pace, movement and ability to attack spaces behind the defence could cause AmaZulu problems, particularly if Pirates dominate possession.

Tshepang Moremi — Orlando Pirates

Moremi also scored against Milford and provides another attacking outlet for the champions. His movement around the final third could be crucial against an AmaZulu defence that will likely try to keep the game compact.

Patrick Maswanganyi — Orlando Pirates

Maswanganyi remains an important creative presence for Pirates. His ability to operate between midfield and attack gives the Buccaneers another way of breaking down a disciplined defensive block.

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya — AmaZulu

Ngwenya was among AmaZulu’s leading scorers last season, registering six league goals, and will be one of the players Usuthu can rely on for attacking inspiration.

Athini Maqokola — AmaZulu

Maqokola also finished last season with six league goals and offers AmaZulu another potential source of goals in a fixture where their opportunities may be limited.

Prediction

AmaZulu have home advantage and arrive with confidence after their opening-day victory, but Pirates have the stronger recent record in this fixture and possess considerable attacking quality.

The champions’ 2-0 win over Milford also showed that they can control matches without needing to take unnecessary risks. Their recent dominance of this head-to-head makes them the side I favour.

Score prediction: AmaZulu 0-2 Orlando Pirates.
