Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Campaign Begins with Defeat

Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign got off to a disappointing start as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to tournament hosts Mexico in the opening match at a packed Estadio Azteca.

Roared on by more than 80,000 passionate supporters, Mexico made a bright start and nearly opened the scoring within five minutes.

South African captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was forced into an early save, denying Raul Jimenez with a sharp stop after the striker unleashed a powerful low shot.

Bafana Bafana’s resistance was broken in the ninth minute following a costly defensive mistake. Attempting to play out from the back, Bafana surrendered possession in a dangerous area, allowing Julian Quinones to capitalise.

The Mexican forward calmly created space before slotting a low effort through Williams’ legs to give the hosts the lead.

Mexico continued to dominate much of the first half, with Quinones and Roberto Alvarado causing constant problems for the South African defence.

The hosts came close to extending their advantage before the break when Quinones struck the base of the post following another slick attacking move.

Any hopes of a second-half comeback were dealt a major blow just four minutes after the restart. Sithole was shown a straight red card for bringing down Brian Gutierrez as the last defender, reducing South Africa to 10 men.

Mexico eventually made their numerical advantage count. Raul Jimenez marked his first World Cup start with a goal, arriving at the back post to head home Alvarado’s inviting cross and double the hosts’ lead.

Bafana’s frustrating evening deteriorated further late in the match when substitute Themba Zwane received a straight red card following an altercation with Alvarado, leaving South Africa with nine men.

Mexico were also reduced to 10 players in the closing stages after Cesar Montes was sent off for a challenge on Khuliso Mudau, but by then the outcome was already decided.

The victory handed Mexico the perfect start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa will need to regroup quickly ahead of crucial group-stage encounters against Czechia and South Korea.
