So, get ready for some unforgettable moments, exciting tries, and fierce rivalries in the Junior World Championship. Here’s everything you need to know about the tournament.
What is the World Rugby Junior World Championship?
The World Rugby Junior World Championship is the premier international rugby tournament for men’s Under-20 national teams. This year the competition is returning to a 16-team format for the first time since 2009.
The tournament is seen as a building block for future rugby stars. Springboks such as Handre Pollard, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Steven Kitshoff were all part of the baby Boks playing in the Junior World Championship in 2012. Here, South Africa won its first title.
Tournament Format and Pools
This year the format is divided into four pools of four teams each. After three pool matches, teams are divided into knock-out brackets based on their finishing position. Pool winners, the team with the best points, will advance to the semi-finals. The remaining teams will compete for final placings.
South Africa is in Pool A alongside Georgia, Uruguay, and Wales. The Junior Springboks open their campaign against Uruguay on 27 June. This is followed by games against Georgia (2 July) and Wales (7 July).
Junior Springboks Aim for Back-to-Back Titles
The Baby Boks, captained by Siphosethu Mnebelele, head into this competition with the hopes of defending their title.
“It is such an honour to be selected as captain of this talented group of players. I believe we have a strong leadership group, and that will be a tremendous help to me as team captain,” Mnebelele said.
He, along with the rest of the squad, are excited to finalise their preparations for their first clash of the tournament against Uruguay. They come into this tournament with confidence after winning both matches against Georgia earlier this year.
But the Junior Springboks are aware of the upcoming competition for the Junior World Championship title: “We expect every team to be competitive and to pose a real challenge. I believe we have prepared well over the past few weeks, and we are ready and excited for the tournament.”
Head coach Kevin Foote named an exceptional squad that blends returning world championships with new talent.
Players to Watch
Siphosethu Mnebelele
Captain of the Junior Springboks, Siphosethu Mnebelele’s performance in the SA ‘A’ match against Zimbabwe made him a player to watch. His role as a hooker is undeniable. He plays a crucial role in the breakdown and in defence.
Yaqeen Ahmed
Flyhalf of the Junior Springboks, Yaqeen Ahmed is known to cause chaos in the opposition’s backline. His ability to sidestep with artistry and precision makes him one to watch.
Can South Africa Defend Their Title?
This next generation of rugby stars are ready to take centre stage and defend their title in the World Rugby Junior World Championship. As one of the strongest teams in the competition, they will likely be up against the traditional rugby powerhouse nations later in the competition.
So, if they can navigate the pool stages and maintain their consistency in the knockout rounds, they have a chance of defending their title and returning home with the trophy.
