Weekend Wrap-Up Wins: Springboks, SA A, & Protea Women

Three teams, three victories, and one unforgettable weekend. The Springboks thrashed the Barbarians, SA ‘A’ dominated Zimbabwe, and the Protea Women boosted their World Cup hopes with a crucial win over India. Here’s how South Africa delivered a perfect weekend of sporting success.

It was a memorable weekend for South African sports fans all around as the Springboks, South Africa ‘A’, and Protea Women delivered back-to-back victories.

The Springboks kicked off their 2026 season with a massive win against the Barbarians, while the SA ‘A’ won against Zimbabwe. Not only this, but the Protea Women showed their true form, winning against India in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Springbok Outclass Barbarians in Season Opener

The Springboks made a strong statement winning their opening match of the season. They defeated the Barbarians 80-31 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqererha on Saturday.

Several new faces were given an opportunity to play alongside seasoned professionals. Among these new players was Riley Norton, who scored a try for the Boks within the first 30 minutes.

The world champions continued to show impressive attacking skills while maintaining their trademark physicality. They dominated the set pieces, won the collision battle, and scored 12 tries throughout the match.

This impressive display of dominance provided valuable momentum as the Springboks build towards their upcoming Test matches.

South Africa ‘A’ Too Strong for Zimbabwe

Although somewhat disjointed at times, the SA ‘A’ side showcased their skills, winning 40-0 against Zimbabwe on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqererha.

Led by captain Vincent Tshituka, this largely uncapped and youthful side showcased their depth and physicality throughout the match. They controlled territory and possession for most of the game, making it a hard match for the Zimbabwe side.

With two disallowed tries, the score could have been even higher. The first try came in the 17th minute. Flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed broke and stepped the last line of defence for a converted try. From here, the SA ‘A’ side was unstoppable, scoring six tries.

Protea Women’s Bounce Back Win Against India

The Protea Women completed South Africa’s winning streak weekend by defeating India in a crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup clash.

After their loss against Australia at the start of the tournament, the Protea Women have been on a winning streak. Their win against Pakistan reignited their confidence and helped them win against India on Sunday.

This win was crucial in keeping their hopes alive for a semi-finals spot. It also restored confidence ahead of their group-stage match against the Netherlands on Thursday.

Now, two matches stand between them and the semi-finals. Their winning streak could prove crucial for a World Cup final spot.

A Perfect Weekend for South African Sport

Three matches, three victories, and plenty of reasons for South African supporters to celebrate. So, if this weekend was anything to go by, South African sport could be set for an exciting few months ahead.
