Proteas Women Fall to England as T20 World Cup Dream Ends

The Protea Women suffered a 40-run defeat to England in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final. Relive the key moments, top performances, and how England booked their place in the final against Australia.

The Proteas Women’s ICC T20 World Cup campaign came to an end in last night’s defeat against England in the semi-final at The Oval. England thrashed South Africa by 40 runs, despite the Proteas Women starting the match well. The Proteas were unable to contain England’s middle order before falling short in their chase of 170.

England Recover After Early Collapse

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, South Africa started the game off with England sitting at 23/3. Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail put the hosts under immediate pressure. But Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight changed the momentum of the match.

The pair shared a superb 133-run partnership for the fourth wicket, taking the game away from the Proteas. Sciver-Brunt finished with a match-winning 75 from just 47 balls. Knight added 58 off 47 deliveries as England posted a competitive 169/5 from their 20 overs.

Proteas Never Found their Momentum

Needing to chase 170 for a place in the final against Australia, the Proteas were unable to build partnerships against England’s disciplined bowling attack.

England’s bowlers kept the pressure going throughout the innings. Unfortunately, South Africa struggled to build meaningful partnerships during batting.

Wolvaardt made 17 balls before being caught out. Tazmin Brits scored 51 from 45 balls and was the top-scorer for the South African side. So, in the end, England restricted the Proteas Women to 129/8 after 20 overs.

England Through to the Final

After their 40-run win over the Proteas Women, England head to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final. They go up against the defending champions Australia in an exciting showdown at Lord’s.

Although the South Africa side’s tournament ends in the semi-finals, they have once again shown why they are ranked in the top 5 in the world. They have consistently made it to the finals and semi-finals in the previous World Cups.

So, the Proteas Women will now turn their attention to future tournaments as they continue their pursuit of a first ICC trophy.
