What Is Basketball?

Similar to Netball, Basketball is a court-based game where two teams with five players each, try to score points by shooting the ball through a hoop that is 10 feet high. With Netball, you’re not allowed to dribble the ball, but with Basketball, you can move the ball by bouncing it to your teammates.

Basketball is a high-speed sport that requires skill and non-stop action. Depending on the position plays, the player’s height size can be a huge advantage. Unlike some sports where scoring is rare, points are scored regularly, keeping the action alive and entertaining.

What Is the NBA League?

The NBA, or National Basketball Association, is the top professional basketball league in the world. It features 30 teams from across the United States and Canada. These teams compete for the chance to win the NBA Championship trophy.

The NBA is home to some of the greatest athletes in sports history like Michael Jordan and attracts so many fans from all over the world.

How Does Scoring Work in NBA League?

Basketball scoring is easy to understand. As with any other sport, the team with the most points wins. If the game ends in a tie, it goes overtime until one team wins.

  • 1 point – This is basically a penalty, you get it if there’s a technical foul while a player is shooting.
  • 2 points – Shot made inside the three-point line. This includes layups, jump shots, and dunks.
  • 3 points – Shot made from beyond the three-point line. The shooter’s feet must not touch the line during the jump or release.

How Long is an NBA Game?

The NBA game has four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes and making the whole game 48 minutes long. The game can take up to 2 – 2.5 hours because of fouls, timeouts, ball out of bounds. The halftime break is only 15 minutes, to give the teams a chance to regroup.

Understanding the Positions

Each player on the court has a role. Here are the five traditional basketball positions:

  • Point Guard is the team’s primary playmaker, responsible for controlling the game, creating scoring chances, and directing the offense. Stephen Curry is one of the most famous point guards in NBA history.
  • Shooting Guard is usually the team’s best scorer and long-range shooter, specialising in three-pointers and mid-range shots. They also need strong ball-handling, passing, and defensive skills, often helping the point guard with playmaking duties.
  • Small Forward is a versatile player who helps with scoring, rebounding, ball handling, and defense. They can play inside and outside, needing to shoot, drive to the basket, and defend multiple positions effectively.
  • Power Forward mainly plays close to the basket, focusing on rebounding, defending, and scoring in the low post.
  • center is usually the tallest player on the team, responsible for blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, and scoring close to the basket.
