Springboks vs Wales: Prediction, Players to Watch and Match Preview

The Springboks return to Durban looking to extend their winning streak when they face Wales in the Nations Championship. We preview both teams, highlight the players to watch and share our prediction for this exciting rugby showdown.

Springboks

The Springboks return to Durban this Saturday looking to complete a perfect Southern Hemisphere leg of the Nations Championship when they face Wales at Kings Park.

South Africa has looked every bit like the world’s top-ranked side in their opening matches, beating both England and Scotland with confidence. Another victory this weekend would extend their winning streak to 11 Tests and give them plenty of momentum heading into the next phase of the competition.

Match Preview

For Wales, this tour is about much more than just the result. Steve Tandy’s side is continuing to build a new-look squad, giving younger players valuable experience against some of the strongest teams in world rugby.

Although Wales have struggled for consistency over the past few seasons, there have been encouraging performances along the way. They claimed an impressive Six Nations victory over Italy and produced competitive displays against Ireland and Scotland. They also opened this year’s Nations Championship with a win over Fiji before Argentina proved too strong in round two.

The challenge now becomes even tougher. Playing the Springboks in Durban is one of the biggest tests in international rugby, especially after South Africa recorded a dominant victory when these teams last met.

While Wales will arrive with confidence that they are moving in the right direction, the Springboks will see this as another opportunity to sharpen their combinations and continue their impressive run of form in front of their home supporters.

Players to Watch

South Africa

Making his Test debut, Vusi Moyo is one of the biggest talking points ahead of kick-off. The exciting fly-half earned his opportunity through outstanding performances at the junior level and now has the chance to show he belongs on the international stage. His game management and attacking vision could play a major role in unlocking the Welsh defence.

The Springboks are also set to hand opportunities to Jaco Williams, Ruben van Heerden and Carlu Sadie. Williams offers genuine pace out wide and is dangerous whenever he gets space, while Van Heerden adds size and line-out quality to the pack. Sadie will have an important job in the front row as South Africa look to establish dominance at scrum time.

Experienced stars like Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe and Pieter-Steph du Toit remain the heartbeat of the team and will be expected to lead from the front.

Wales

Wales will once again rely on captain Jac Morgan, whose relentless work at the breakdown and defensive intensity make him one of their most valuable players.

Flyhalf Sam Costelow will be responsible for directing the attack and keeping Wales in the right areas of the field. If the visitors are to create scoring chances, much will depend on his decision-making under pressure.

Speedster Rio Dyer has the pace to trouble any defence if given opportunities in open space, while lock Dafydd Jenkins faces a huge challenge against one of rugby’s strongest forward packs. His work in the set pieces and around the field will be vital if Wales hopes to stay competitive.

Prediction

It’s difficult to look past the Springboks in this fixture. They have won their opening Nations Championship matches comfortably, are playing at home, and continue to show why they are the benchmark in international rugby.

Wales have shown signs of improvement and should offer more resistance than they did in previous meetings, but matching South Africa’s power for 80 minutes is another challenge altogether.

If the Springboks dominate the set pieces and control possession, they should create enough opportunities to pull away during the second half. Bet on rugby today and cheer on your favourite team as they win.

Best Bet: South Africa to win by 16 points or more.
