Cheetahs vs Lions: Preview and Predictions 

It’s the battle of the cats in the first round of the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division as the Toyota Cheetahs take on the Fidelity ADT Lions on Sunday, 19 July.  

While these teams now represent two proud rugby unions, they share a unique chapter in South African rugby history. Until 2006, the Free State and Golden Lions unions combined to form the Cats franchise in the old Super Rugby competition.  

During that era, many of the country’s top players represented both unions under one team. This created a close rugby relationship that still adds extra intrigue whenever these sides meet. 

The Cheetahs and Lions have also enjoyed plenty of memorable Currie Cup encounters over the years. Both teams have lifted South Africa’s oldest domestic trophy multiple times and have consistently produced fast-paced, attacking rugby. The Currie Cup is all about building momentum, and an opening-round victory can set the tone for the rest of the campaign. 

The Cheetahs will be eager to make a statement once again after assembling an experienced squad featuring several seasoned campaigners and the return of Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk. Playing at altitude and in front of their home supporters gives them a home advantage.
