Baby Boks Crowned Back-to-Back Junior World Champions

The Junior Springboks defended their title as Junior World Champions on Saturday with their back-to-back victory. They became the fourth team to go back-to-back in the history of the tournament.  

They won 15-6 at the World Rugby Junior World Championship final against France. This match saw four disallowed tries, three of them for the Junior Springboks. Here, South Africa controlled the contest from the opening whistle, never allowing France to build momentum.  

Junior Springboks Edge France to Retain their Crown 

The defending champions took an early lead through the reliable boot of fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed. Ahmed added another penalty just before half-time, giving South Africa a 6-0 lead after an attritional opening forty minutes. 

France continued to challenge after the break, but the Junior Springboks’ defensive line remained unmoving. Every French attack was met with fierce tackling as South Africa refused to concede territory.  

The breakthrough eventually came when South Africa crossed for the only try of the match. France managed a late consolation try, but it proved too little, too late as South Africa closed out a 16-5 victory. 

Defence Laid the Foundation 

Championship finals are often decided by defence, and this encounter was no different. 

South Africa’s defence frustrated France throughout the contest. The Junior Springboks consistently won the collisions, slowed French possession, and forced errors at crucial moments. Their disciplined performance ensured France never found the attacking rhythm that had carried them to the final. 

It was a mature display from a squad that has shown remarkable composure throughout the tournament. This proved that they can win in both high-scoring contests and tense defensive battles. 

A Historic Achievement for the Junior Springboks 

By lifting the trophy once again, the Junior Springboks have written another memorable chapter in South African rugby history. 

South Africa have now won 11 consecutive matches in the World Rugby Junior World Championship.

Many members of this squad are expected to progress into professional rugby over the coming seasons, with several, such as Yaqeen Ahmed, already showing the qualities needed to represent the future Springboks.
