What is the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup?

Happening every two years, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is the premier international championship for women’s T20 cricket. It was first held in 2009 and has since grown in popularity over the years.

This year’s tournament is expected to be one of the most competitive World Cups yet. The reigning champions, New Zealand, will be returning to redeem their title.

They’ll be up against nations such as Australia who have won six titles. Not only this, but they’ll also face favourites such as England, South Africa, and India.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Format Explained

The 2026 edition sees an expanded format featuring 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each team will play every other team in their group once during the group stage.

Group 1

  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • India
  • Netherlands
  • Pakistan
  • South Africa

Group 2

  • England
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Scotland
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies

Once the group stage concludes, the top two teams from each stage will make it through to the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played at the Oval on 30 June and 2 July. The winners of each semi-final will make it through to the final at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 5 July.

The Protea Women at the 2026 T20 World Cup

The Protea Women come into this tournament on a high after being the runners-up at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. They will be hoping to win their first World Cup title this year. This is a strong possibility based on their previous performance, experienced stars, and being one of the strongest teams in the international game.

But being placed in Group 1 means that they have lots of competition. They’ll be playing against Australia and India, both key matches to determine who progresses to the knockout stages. So, with only the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals, every match counts.

All in all, the question on everyone’s mind is: Can South Africa win their first Women’s T20 World Cup?
