PSL Season Review Part 3

To wrap up the 29th PSL season, we continue our four-part review of every team’s performance from the recent campaign.

Each day covers key stats from four teams in alphabetical order. In Part 3 of the series, we turn our attention to teams from P to S — Polokwane City, Richards Bay, Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch. Enjoy the read.

Polokwane City
Position swing from last season: +1
Top scorer in all comps: Lebohang Nkaki (4 goals)

A slight improvement from the previous campaign (position-wise), but even the most optimistic of Polokwane City fans will know they could have finished even higher. Whispers of qualifying for CAF started to emerge when they were third at the beginning of February, with half their season played. For all that promise, what followed was rather disappointing. They went on to win just one of their next 14 games, but with everyone around them floundering, it didn’t matter much.

8 – Polokwane have finished in the Top 8 for consecutive seasons for the first time in their top-flight history.

Sekhukhune
Position swing from last season:
Top scorer in all comps: Linda Mntambo (7 goals)

A team that has developed over the course of their top-flight adventure. Sekhukhune came into the big league 2021/22 and finished 11th, but have improved ever since. From 33 points to 40, then 45 and now 46. Notwithstanding that this was a 28-game season, they have won more games (13) and scored more goals (39) than any other season before. A late stumble means they miss out on CAF football, but they will be content with their progress sio far

4 – Sekhukhune are the first team in PSL history to improve their points totakls for four seasons in a row.

Stellenbosch
Position swing from last season:
Top scorer in all comps: Devin Titus (13 goals)

There is now a surge of anticipation when Stellenbosch are mentioned in football circles, as there should be with a team run as well as they have been. They lost key players at the start and midway through the aseson, played 51 games (including taxing CAF trips) and often played home games away from home. It was a tough season. Reaching the CAF semi-finals will be an obvious highlight, but getting to the MTN8 final while beating Sundowns home and away is nothing to be looked down on.

1.71 – Stellies accrued 1.71 points per game this season, their best ratio since they came into the top-flight.
