World Cup Preview: Netherlands vs Morocco

The Netherlands and Morocco meet for the World Cup Round of 32 clash with everything to play for. A spot in the last 16 awaits the winner, where Canada lie in wait after their knockout victory over South Africa.

Netherlands vs Morocco

Two of the world’s top-ranked nations, the Netherlands and Morocco, go head-to-head in the World Cup for a place in the last 16. Playing in Guadalupe this evening, both teams are up for a challenge.

With both nations boasting quality across the pitch and ambitions of lifting the trophy, this promises to be one of the most entertaining matches of the Round of 32. The winner will advance to face Canada for a place in the quarterfinals.

Netherlands

The Netherlands recovered well after being held to a draw by Japan in their opening group match. They men responded with convincing victories over Sweden and Tunisia, finishing top of their group in impressive fashion.

Despite that achievement, they have been handed in one of the toughest knockout draws, with an early meeting against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

The Oranje are expected to keep the core of the side that finished top of Group F. Captain Virgil van Dijk heads a defence that has got better with every game as Frenkie de Jong remains the heartbeat of the midfield. Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons will add creativity and attacking threats in the final third.

Morocco

Morocco arrive full of confidence after continuing the momentum they built in recent years. Following their memorable run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and their Africa Cup of Nations triumph, the Atlas Lions have firmly established themselves among the elite.

Sitting just above the Netherlands in the FIFA rankings, Mohamed Ouahbi’s team have genuine ambitions of making another deep run in this competition. Their campaign began with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil before comfortable victories over Scotland and Haiti secured qualification.

Morocco showed their resilience in the final group match, coming from behind twice to defeat Haiti 4-2. However, Brazil’s dominant win over Scotland meant the North Africans had to settle for second place in Group C.

What’s at stake

There’s no room for error in the knockout stage. The winner of this battle will secure a place in the Round of 16, where Canada awaits after eliminating South Africa.

A win would keep the Netherlands’ hopes alive of winning a first-ever FIFA World Cup. They have reached three finals without lifting the trophy and will be keen to make another deep run in the competition.

Morocco have a history of their own to pursue. The Atlas Lions, who made history as the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, will be looking to show that this wasn’t a once-off thing.

Starting lineup prediction

Netherlands

Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Malen, Brobbey, Gakpo

Morocco

Bounou; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Diaz, Ounahi, El Khannouss; Saibari

Prediction

This has all the makings of a very tight knockout game. Morocco’s defensive discipline should frustrate the Netherlands for long stretches, but the Dutch have slightly more attacking depth and quality in the final third.

Prediction: Netherlands 2 Morocco 1
