FIFA World Cup 2026
World Cup Preview: Brazil vs Japan, What’s at stake
Brazil will face Japan in Houston on Monday in one of the standout fixtures of the FIFA World Cup Round of 32. The five-time world champions enter the knockout stages as favourites, but Japan arrive with confidence after another impressive tournament campaign and the belief they can produce another famous upset.
Brazil
The Brazilians have grown into the tournament under Carlo Ancelotti after an opening draw before convincing victories over both Haiti and Scotland. Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior has been their standout performer with four goals, while Neymar has returned to add creativity, and experience in attack for the Samba Boys. Winger Raphinha remains a fitness concern after a hamstring injury, meaning youngster Rayan is expected to continue in attack alongside Matheus Cunha and Vinícius.
Japan
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu is expected to rely on his disciplined and energetic side built around goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, defender Hiroki Ito, midfield creator Daichi Kamada and striker Ayase Ueda. However, the Samurai Blue have been dealing with injury concerns, with several regulars unavailable, including Takefusa Kubo, while defensive adjustments are also expected.
Head-to-head
History heavily favours Brazil.
- Meetings: 14
- Brazil wins: 13
- Japan wins: 1
- Draws: 0
Japan’s only victory over Brazil came in a 3-2 friendly in October 2025, ending a long winless run against the Samba Boys. Coach Ancelotti’s side will be eager to avenge that defeat, while the Asians will want to prove that they can compete with one of football’s elite powerhouses.
What’s at stake?
There is no second chance in the knockout phase. The winner advances to the Round of 16, where a meeting with either Ivory Coast or Norway will be scheduled, while the loser heads home. Brazil is chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title, whereas Japan is aiming to reach new heights by making a deep run in the competition after another strong showing on the global stage. They have been eliminated in the round of 16 in the previous tournaments.
Verdict
Japan have shown they are capable competing against the world’s best, but Brazil’s attacking quality, tournament experience and improving form make them favourites to progress. Expect a competitive contest, with Brazil to win by 2-1.
