Sithole: Bafana Can Cope Without Mokoena and Zwane

Sphephelo Sithole insists Bafana Bafana remain confident and highly motivated to defeat South Korea and secure a historic place in the World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

South Africa’s World Cup tournament got off to a disappointing start with a 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico, a match that saw both Sithole and Themba Zwane receive red cards. Sithole endured a difficult outing but says the unwavering support from his teammates and coaching staff has helped him bounce back ahead of the crucial clash against South Korea.

While Zwane remains sidelined after receiving a three-match suspension, Sithole is available again after serving his one-match ban during Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Czechia in their second Group A encounter.

Bafana Bafana must claim all three points to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout rounds, while South Korea require only a draw to progress.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s decisive fixture, Sithole acknowledged his poor performance against Mexico but highlighted the unity within the squad.

“I know that I didn’t have a good game in the first match, but the response I got from the team was incredible,” Sithole told KickOff.

“Everyone supported me, including the coach. He stood by me, and I think that’s what makes us a very good team, we have good people in this group.”

With Teboho Mokoena suspended after accumulating two yellow cards, Sithole could return to the starting lineup and play a key role in midfield.

“The only thing we need to do tomorrow is win the game if we want to qualify,” he said. “We are more than motivated for that challenge.”
