World Cup Preview: Colombia vs DR Congo

Colombia look to secure qualification for the knockout stages when they face a confident DR Congo side that stunned Portugal with a 1-1 draw. Expect a tightly contested competition.

Colombia and DR Congo go head-to-head in Guadalajara on Wednesday morning, with both teams arriving full of confidence after a great start to their FIFA World Cup journeys.

While Colombia opened their campaign with an impressive victory, DR Congo also turned heads despite not claiming all three points. The African nation earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Portugal, a result few had predicted after João Neves gave the Europeans an early advantage.

DR Congo showed great character to fight back and secure a valuable point, putting the rest of Group K on notice.

Colombia

Colombia made a strong statement in their opening World Cup match, beating tournament newcomers Uzbekistan 3-1. Another positive result against DR Congo would secure their place in the knockout stages before a highly anticipated clash with Portugal.

Their first assignment saw them take on an unfamiliar Uzbekistan side coached by Fabio Cannavaro. It looks like a similar challenge as they prepare to face DR Congo for the first time in their history.

Head coach Néstor Lorenzo has a full squad available, with no injury concerns or suspensions. As a result, he is expected to stick with the lineup that delivered victory in the opening game.

Colombia is likely to continue with their preferred 4-3-3 setup, a system that balances attacking intent with midfield control. Luis Díaz remains the team’s biggest threat in the final third and is expected to start on the left wing, while experienced captain James Rodríguez will be tasked with creating chances from midfield.

Lorenzo will want his side to stay patient on the ball, control proceedings and avoid being caught out by DR Congo’s dangerous counter-attacking play.

DR Congo

DR Congo head into this clash full of belief after producing one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far. They earned a memorable 1-1 draw against Portugal in their opening World Cup match, showing determination and character against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

Their road to the tournament was equally impressive. They qualified for the World Cup by edging Jamaica 1-0 after extra time in the intercontinental play-offs, proving they can rise to the occasion when it matters most.

Results in the build-up to the tournament were somewhat inconsistent, with a goalless draw against Denmark followed by a narrow defeat to Chile. However, one thing that has remained constant is their defensive discipline, which continues to be one of the team’s greatest strengths.

DR Congo are likely to line up in a compact 5-3-2 formation designed to limit space and make life difficult for Colombia’s attacking players. Up front, experienced striker Cédric Bakambu is expected to partner Yoane Wissa, who arrives in confident mood after finding the back of the net against Portugal.

Captain Chancel Mbemba will once again marshal the back line and look to keep the defence organised under pressure. Desabre’s game plan will likely focus on staying compact, defending with discipline and making the most of quick transitions whenever opportunities arise.

What’s at stake

Currently sitting at the top of Group K with 3 points, if Colombia wins this match, their advancement into the knockout stage would be guaranteed. If the team loses against DR Congo, they will face a very tough path to the Round of 32.

A loss would basically allow DR Congo to take the top spot in group K or possibly making way for Portugal.

Since they last appeared 52 years ago on the World Cup, DR Congo came guns blazing on this tournament. This is seen after a historic draw against the legendary Portugal in their opening match.

Reaching the rounds of 32 would unlock a new era for the country. If the team loses this game, they risk elimination from the knockout rounds, also depending on the results from the other teams in group K.

Players to watch

Captain Rodríguez is known for being the primary creative engine for the team. He has represented his country 122 times and featured at three FIFA World Cups in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

His standout international moment came in Brazil in 2014, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals and earned the Golden Boot award. He has also been a regular presence at Copa América tournaments, playing a key role for Colombia over more than a decade.

  • Yoane Wissa – DR Congo

After scoring the goal against Portugal, Wissa proved once again that he is indeed the best player for the DR Congo team. He is the focal point of attack and is expected to give Colombia the competition that they never knew they needed.

His most dangerous attributes are the pace and clinical finishes that he gives on the pitch. On the World Cup stage, he could be even more dangerous if the team progresses to the knockout stages.

Predictions

Colombia are seen as favourites after that impressive 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening match. However, DR Congo proved against Portugal that they are not a side to be underestimated.

Expect the DR Congo to sit deep, remain compact and look to exploit any spaces left behind by Colombia. While DR Congo’s resilience should make this a competitive contest, Colombia’s superior quality in midfield and attack could ultimately prove decisive.
