The top two nations in Group G will battle it out in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Egypt takes on Iran. Egypt are currently at the top of the log with four points from two matches, while Iran are in second place with two points. Iran are currently tied points-wise with Belgium, who is sitting in third place on the log.

Egypt

Egypt has exceeded expectations in Group G as they currently sit at the top of the log. This comes after a 1-1 draw to Belgium and a 3-1 win over New Zealand. The win over New Zealand was their first victory in nearly 90 years. They are now on the verge of making history by qualifying for the Round of 32.

They have a fully fit squad available with no reported injuries or suspensions ahead of the match. This has allowed the team to stay focused on qualifying for the knockouts. But the pressure of this qualification could prove detrimental. Managing this pressure could be key to their success.

Iran

Iran have little room for error coming into this match. They currently sit in second place, where their points are tied with Belgium. This comes after a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and a stalemate against Belgium.

Their journey to the World Cup has been anything but simple. The squad faced several travel and logistical problems due to restrictions of movement within the host countries.

These restrictions have caused recovery and preparation problems for the squad, according to coach Amir Ghalenoei. Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Roozbeh Cheshmi, and Saman Ghoddos have all been out due to injury.

So, Iran will need their experienced players to step up in what is effectively a knockout match.

What’s at Stake

With Egypt currently leading the table, they know a win here would secure them a spot as group winners.

For Iran, being in second place, with equal points to Belgium, a win here is a do-or-die situation in order to make it to the knockout stages. If Belgium wins their match and Iran loses theirs, Iran’s chances of making it through to the knockouts becomes dependent on another team’s results.

Verdict

Expect a tactical battle and a closely contested World Cup match. Both sides will be bringing their all to ensure a win. Iran’s discipline and experienced squad gives them an edge. But Egypt’s side has players such as Mohamed Salah.

Will both teams be making it through to the Round of 32? Or will one be knocked out? Bet on the World Cup now with bet.co.za.
