Group Stage vs Knockout Stage: What’s the Difference?

What Is the Knockout Stage? 

The knockout stage is also known as the elimination stage. It consists of the last 32 (Round of 32). Here, if a match ends in a draw, it will go to extra time. If the match still ends in a draw after the extra time, it goes into a penalty shootout to decide the winner.  

The winner in each Round of 32 moves on to the last 16 round. The Round of 16 works the same way the Round of 32 does. The winners of each game make their way to the quarterfinals. The four teams that win the quarterfinals will advance to the semi-finals.  

The two teams who have won the semi-finals will face each other in the final. They play for the prestigious World Cup title and trophy. The other two teams who lost the semi-finals will contest for a bronze medal (third place).
