The squad was officially unveiled at a ceremony at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, with Broos opting for a goalkeeper trio of Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns captain), Ricardo Goss (on loan at Siwelele), and Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates.
Despite Petersen’s strong season for Kaizer Chiefs, where he kept 15 clean sheets in 24 Premier Soccer League matches Broos said the decision came down to familiarity and integration within the squad.
“We only had two days of the camp, and we had top goalkeepers in camp,” Broos said.
“But I don’t know Brandon as a person, and I couldn’t decide on him in those two days. It was purely a matter of integration.”
Broos added that his concern was how new players would adapt quickly to the team environment in a major tournament.
“It was purely a matter of integration to the team. I don’t know, how he’ll react when he doesn’t start.”
Petersen was among six players omitted from the Bafana’s final squad, alongside Thabiso Monyane, Lebohang Maboe, Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Thapelo Morena.
