Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has provided an encouraging injury update ahead of the world champions’ upcoming international fixtures, confirming that Siya Kolisi is expected to return next week, while Eben Etzebeth and Franco Mostert will spend more time on the sidelines.
The biggest concern remains Etzebeth, who sustained a concussion during training before South Africa’s Nations Championship victory over England. Given the experienced lock’s history of head injuries, the Springboks are taking a cautious approach to his recovery.
Erasmus confirmed that Etzebeth is unlikely to feature in the remainder of the incoming Test series, with the coaching staff prioritising his long-term health.
Mostert is facing a similar recovery timeline after suffering an ankle injury during South Africa’s match against the Barbarians last month. The veteran forward is also expected to miss the next few weeks.
The Springbok management is hopeful that both Etzebeth and Mostert will be available for the clash against Argentina on 8 August, which serves as the final fixture before the eagerly anticipated series against New Zealand.
There was better news regarding captain Siya Kolisi, who is closing in on his return after recovering from a hamstring injury. Erasmus indicated that the skipper should be available for selection next week.
Several other players are also progressing well in rehabilitation. Lood de Jager is nearing a return from a hip injury and could feature against Wales in Durban, while Ethan Hooker is also close to regaining full fitness.
Meanwhile, Ox Nche, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morne van den Berg continue their recoveries from ankle, shoulder and bicep injuries respectively. According to Erasmus, the trio should all be fit well before the Springboks begin their blockbuster series against New Zealand.
With key players gradually returning, South Africa’s squad is expected to be close to full strength as they prepare for one of the biggest challenges of the international rugby calendar.
