Another season, another Sundowns title. Here are 10 records that stand out.

Sundowns beat Chippa United 3-0 on Wednesday night to seal yet another South African Premiewrship title.

The result put the Brazilians 15 points ahead of their nearest challengers Orlando Pirates, who only have four games remaining and are mathematically out of the race. This is the 18th time overall (since 1971) that Sundowns have won the league, more than any other team.

In the PSL era (since 1996), this is the 15th time they lift the crown, with the last eight of those coming in consecutive seasons (both league records also).

It is difficult to differentiate between the eight consecutive titles from 2017/18 as most of them have followed the same dominant formula, but one way is through coaching staff. Yet, even that comes up short.

While there have been coaching changes in recent years, Downs are mostly a stable ship, with four “changes” in that period. However, using statistical records, we can pick out 10 stats that make this particular achievement unique from the rest. Bear in mind, all records below exclude the 2-1 Royal AM result, later annulled because of the Durban sides’ financial troubles. But, how will this Sundowns be remembered?

1. As Centurions

100 – This Sundowns have scored 100 goals across all competitions this season, becoming the first team in PSL history to reach 100 goals in a single campaign.

2. As Goalscorers

62 – This Sundowns are the first team to score 62* goals during a single season in the 30-game PSL era (2002/3 onwards). The previous record was 56, and they still have one game to play.

3. For their Multiple-Goal games

20 – This was the 20th league game this season in which Sundowns scored 2 or more goals. Only the 1998/99 Chiefs & 1999/00 Pirates have done so on more occasions in a season (21).

4. For the 3+ Goal-Games

13 – This was the 13th league game this season in which Sundowns scored 3 or more goals, equalling the record set by 1999/00 Sundowns.

5. For their Portuguese winning coach

1 – Miguel Cardoso is the first Portuguese coach to win the South African league title.

6. For breaching 70 points in 27 games

70 – Sundowns have reached the 70-point mark in each of the last three seasons, but this is the first time they do so in 27 games.

6. For the number of wins

23 – Sundowns have won 23 games this season, equalling the PSL record for wins by a team in a single season (incl. Manning Rangers 96/97, Sundowns 98/99 & 99/00 and Kaizer Chiefs 98/99).

8. For beating all teams

100% – Downs have beaten every team they have faced in the league this season at least once, just the 2nd time this has happened for them after 2022/23.

9. For the number of League Doubles

9 – Downs have now won home & away against nine different opponents this season, setting a new record for league doubles by a team in a PSL season.

10. For this trilogy

3 – Miguel Cardoso (3-0 x 3) is only the 3rd coach in PSL history to win three consecutive league games by a margin of 3+ goals, (also  Gavin Hunt in October 2001 (Black Leopards) and Neil Tovey in November 2000 (Sundowns).
