The Top Shooters in the PSL

Who are the players taking the most shots in the PSL this season?

As the AFCON break is in full swing, earlier this week we looked at the most creative players in the PSL. Today, we examine the players at the end of those chances and consider shots taken by individual players. Goals start with a willingness to take risks and players who are capable of pulling the trigger. This is the definitive list of the PSL’s most prolific shooters, the player’s who have recorded the highest volume of attempts in front of goal so far this season. Leading the pack by a significant margin is Kaizer Chiefs’ explosive forward, Makabi Lilepo, setting the pace with a remarkable 47 shots.

The Dominance of Lilepo

Lilepo’s 47 attempts across just 11 games is not just a leading figure; it’s a statement of dominance within his team’s attack. He has, on average, fired off well over four shots per match, cementing his status as the side’s primary offensive focal point. Such a high volume suggests a forward given the license to shoot at will, highlighting his importance to the team’s creative setup, though it also raises the age-old question of efficiency versus sheer quantity.

Trailing him, but still posting an impressive individual count, is Trevor Mokwena of Durban City, who has registered 32 shots across 13 appearances. Mokwena’s consistency, having played the most games of any player in the top 10, showcases his tireless work rate and enduring presence in the attacking third. The 15-shot gulf between first and second place highlights just how far ahead Lilepo is in terms of shot volume this season.

The Next Pack

The field quickly tightens up beneath the top two, where a cluster of players are separated by mere attempts. Sede Junior Dion (Golden Arrows) and Kgomotso Mosadi (Magesi) both stand tall with 26 shots. Mosadi’s figure is particularly noteworthy, as he reached that tally in only 10 games, suggesting one of the highest shot rates per 90 minutes in the entire division, an impressive feat for a player representing Magesi.

Following close behind is a tight trio locked on 24 shots: Puso Dithejane (TS Galaxy), Sibusiso Tshabalala (Polokwane City), and Devin Titus (Stellenbosch FC). The diversity of teams represented in this list is testament to the widespread attacking talent across the league, proving that attacking prowess isn’t limited to the traditional powerhouse clubs. Interestingly, Kaizer Chiefs are the only team with two players in the Top 10, as Mduduzi Shabalala joins Lilepo in the final bracket, indicating their clear offensive philosophy this season.

Rounding out the elite group of top shooters, we find a trio tied on 23 shots: Daniel Msendami (Marumo Gallants), veteran striker Gabadinho Mhango (Richards Bay), and the aforementioned Mduduzi Shabalala. This tight grouping demonstrates the fierce competition among the PSL’s most aggressive attackers. While a high shot count is the necessary foundation for a top goal-scorer, the next phase of the season will be defined by which of these ‘trigger men’ can maintain this intensity while drastically improving their shot-to-goal conversion ratio.
