PSL Clean Sheet Records

Orlando Pirates quietly set a new PSL record for consecutive wins with a clean sheet

Orlando Pirates

Since drawing 1-1 with Sundowns in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-finals, Orlando Pirates have embarked on a remarkable run: eight matches, eight wins, eight clean sheets.

It’s the first time in club history that the Buccaneers have won eight in a row, and also the first time they’ve kept eight consecutive clean sheets. The big question that has followed – what is the PSL record for winning while keeping a clean sheet? We’ve dug through history and have a clear answer: Pirates’ streak of eight clean-sheet wins is a new PSL benchmark.

Longest winning streaks with a clean sheet (PSL era)

8 – Orlando Pirates (Aug 2025 to date)

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have set the standard for winning while watertight at the back. The sequence began with a 1-0 over Orbit College and a 3-0 vs Chippa in August, followed by a 3-0 in the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch. In CAF Champions League qualifying, Pirates beat Lioli (Lesotho) 3-0 in the first leg and 4-0 in the second, with a 1-0 win over Siwelele in between. The run continued domestically with a 2-0 over TS Galaxy, then a 1-0 Carling Cup win over Siwelele. Eight straight victories, all without conceding, spanning four competitions.

7 – SuperSport United (Mar-Apr 2004)

You have to go back 21 years for the previous record. A young Pitso Mosimane’s SuperSport started with a 5-0 over Civics (of Namibia) in CAFCL preliminaries on 6 March 2004, then posted 1-0 league wins over Sundowns and Jomo Cosmos. The away leg at Civics also finished 1-0, before 2-0 victories against Manning Rangers and Wits extended the run. A 1-0 over Zulu Royals in the ABSA Cup made it seven clean-sheet wins on the bounce, but the streak ended with a 1-1 draw against AS Port Louis 2000.

6 – Mamelodi Sundowns (Apr-May 2025)

Between knocking out Al Ahly in April and hosting Pyramids in the first leg of the CAFCL final, Sundowns rattled off six league wins in 19 days, all to nil: 3-0 v Richards Bay, 2-0 away to Cape Town City, 3-0 to clinch the title v Chippa United, then 3-0 (Stellenbosch), 3-0 (Chippa) and 2-0 (Magesi). They were a minute away from equalling SuperSport’s seven until Walid El Karti’s late equaliser forced a 1-1 draw dfor Pyramids in the first leg of the CAFCL final.

6 – Kaizer Chiefs (Nov-Dec 2003)

Over 20 years ago, Ted Dumitru’s Kaizer Chiefs also put together six straight wins without conceding. Patrick Mayo and John “Shoes” Moshoeu launched the run with a 2-0 over Manning Rangers (league), followed by a 3-0 against Wits in the Coke Cup semi and a 1-0 over Dynamos (league). A 2-0 win over Silver Stars delivered the 2003 Coke Cup, before a late Kabamba Musasa winner settled the Soweto derby 1-0 to make it five. Chiefs 4-0 Zulu Royals would make it six, before Boebie Solomons’ Santos halted the sequence with a 0-0 just before Christmas.

6 – Kaizer Chiefs (Sep-Oct 1997)

Kaizer Chiefs appear twice, the only club with two separate 6+ clean-sheet winning streaks in PSL history. Under Paul Dolezar, they beat Celtic 2-0 (Coke Cup), then stacked four straight 1-0s – v Santos and Jomo Cosmos (league), Wits (Coke Cup) and Moroka Swallows (league). Mark Williams’ brace against Qwa Qwa Stars made it six before a 1-1 draw with Wits in the Cup ended the run.
