Orlando Pirates First League Win, with Sundowns up to Third

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates secured crucial victories on Wednesday evening, with both teams demonstrating contrasting approaches to claim maximum points in the evening’s league games.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns continued their strong start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC at Seshego Stadium, though the match statistics reveal a fascinating tactical battle that unfolded in two distinct halves.

The opening 45 minutes belonged entirely to the hosts, with Magesi FC registering 10 shots compared to Sundowns’ solitary attempt. The expected goals (xG) data show Masandawana generating just 0.06 xG in the first half while allowing their opponents to create several promising opportunities.

However, Miguel Cardoso’s tactical adjustments at halftime proved decisive. Sundowns emerged from the break with renewed purpose, completely flipping the script with eight shots in the second half compared to Magesi’s single attempt. The xG timeline demonstrates this dramatic shift, with Sundowns steadily building pressure before clinical finishes from Jayden Adams and Peter Shalulile sealed the victory.

The victory elevated Sundowns to third place on the log standings with seven points from three matches, trailing leaders Sekhukhune United and second-placed Kaizer Chiefs by just two points.

Orlando Pirates

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates finally broke their winless streak with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium. Unlike Sundowns’ second-half surge, Pirates displayed consistent dominance throughout the encounter.

The shot map reveals Pirates’ superior positioning in dangerous areas, with multiple high-quality chances created in Stellenbosch’s penalty area. Their xG timeline shows steady pressure building from the first whistle, maintaining attacking intent for the full 90 minutes. Newly signed Kamogelo Sebelebele provided the decisive moment with a stunning strike that handed coach Abdeslam Ouaddou his first victory.

This triumph was particularly sweet for Pirates, who had endured back-to-back defeats to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants in their opening fixtures. The victory against their traditional bogey team moved them up to 11th place while Stellenbosch dropped to 14th after failing to register a win in their first three outings.

In the night’s other fixture, AmaZulu continued their solid start with a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, moving up to sixth place with both teams now level on six points after winning two of their opening three matches.
