By The Numbers: PSL Midweek Review

The midweek round of three PSL matches served up the beautiful game in all its various forms – from the good (a textbook 1-0 win), the bad (a drab 0-0 draw), and the gloriously ridiculous (a wild 4-3 thriller).

Orlando Pirates enjoyed a 1-0 home win over Polokwane City, while Chiefs’ struggles were extended as they drew 0-0 with Siwelele at home. Elsewhere, Stellenbosch and Golden Arrows traded blows in a seven-goal thriller in Cape Town. By The Numbers is a statistical review of the midweek action.

Kaizer Chiefs (1.2xG) 0-0 (0.6xG) Siwelele

The early season swagger has turned into a lurch at Kaizer Chiefs, who have now won just one of their last eight games across all competitions. This result sees them drop out of the CAF places into fourth on the table. This was a performance devoid of intensity or urgency from the onset. The field tilt chart shows there were moments when Chiefs were in threatening positions, but none proved fruitful in the end.

2 – shots on target for Chiefs, their fewest in a game this season

0 – big chances for Chiefs, only the 2nd time they have no big chances in a game this season

0 – goals conceded by Siwelele, the first time they keep a clean sheet away from home

Stellenbosch (2.3xG) 4-3 (2.2xG) Golden Arrows

A seven-goal thriller in Cape Town; the first league game to see 7+ goals this year. Golden Arrows did well to fight back three times, but unfortunately, they could not sustain the pressure all the way. The result handed Stellies their 2nd win of the season, and helped them get out of the uncomfortable relegation zone. After back-to-back clean sheets, Arrows have now conceded four in the space of 90 minutes.

7 – goals scored in this game (the first league game in 2025 to see 7+ goals)

5 – games with 7+ goals since the start of the 2021/22 season

4 – games with 7+ goals since the start of the 2021/22 season that have included Arrows (L4)

Orlando Pirates (2.04xG) 1-0 (0.5xG) Polokwane City

Pirates bounded back from the shock 3-0 CAF defeat to beat Polokwane City 1-0 in a no-fuss performance on Wednesday night. The Bucaneers enjoyed more possession and touches in the opposition box, coupled with better chances and the only surprise will be how this only ended 1-0. Yet in some instances, especially after a 3-0 drubbing, the result is far more important than how it is attained. As for their visitors, their struggles continued on the road. Since February, Polokwane City have played 16 away games, and won just one (P16 W1 D6 L9). Yet, this is probably one of their toughest away tests:

6 – consecutive league wins for Orlando Pirates (a first since last season, a run of 7)

6 – consecutive league clean sheets for Orlando Pirates (a first since 2009/10 season)

6 – consecutive league clean sheets with a win for Orlando Pirates (a first for the club in PSL history)
