The 2026/27 United Rugby Championship (URC) serves up its first South African coastal derby of the season as the DHL Stormers take on the Hollywoodbets Sharks in Cape Town on Saturday, 10 October.

The Sharks head into Round 3 at the top of the URC standings with 10 points after winning their opening two matches. They followed a 41-24 victory over the Ospreys with a 26-20 win against defending champions Leinster.

The Stormers, meanwhile, sit eighth with six points after opening their campaign with a 29-15 win over Connacht before suffering a narrow 17-13 defeat to Edinburgh. Both sides will be eager to make a statement, but the Sharks arrive with the stronger early-season record.

Why This Match Matters So Much

There is more than local bragging rights at stake when the Stormers and Sharks meet at DHL Stadium. With the first South African derby weekend of the 2026/27 URC season upon us, both teams have an opportunity to strengthen their position in the standings before the competition takes a break for European action.

For the Stormers, this is a chance to bounce back after their narrow defeat to Edinburgh. John Dobson’s side started the season positively against Connacht but could not maintain that winning momentum in Scotland. Returning to Cape Town gives them home support behind them, while a victory over an unbeaten Sharks side would provide a significant boost to their campaign.

The Sharks have different ambitions. Sitting first with maximum points from their opening two fixtures, they can maintain their position near the top of the table by extending their winning run. Their victory over Leinster also demonstrated that they can compete with leading opposition, making this a valuable test of their consistency away from Durban.

There is also recent history to consider. The Sharks defeated the Stormers twice in the 2025/26 URC campaign, giving the Cape side extra motivation to turn the tables. With several Springboks returning to the provincial teams, this coastal derby promises a high-intensity contest between two squads with plenty of international quality.

Tactical Overview

Can the Stormers make home advantage count?

The Stormers will want to play with tempo, using their attacking backs to stretch the Sharks’ defensive line and create opportunities out wide. The combination of Damian Willemse, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Cobus Reinach gives them several options when moving the ball, whether through quick passing, support running, or individual attacking breaks.

Their returning Springboks could also make a difference in the physical exchanges. Siya Kolisi and Paul de Villiers bring breakdown experience and defensive intensity, while Wilco Louw adds strength to the scrum. However, the Stormers will need to improve their accuracy at the set piece and avoid giving the Sharks opportunities through penalties or loose possession.

Playing at DHL Stadium should encourage the hosts to attack, but they cannot afford to become impatient. Against an unbeaten opponent, controlling territory and making the most of their scoring opportunities will be just as important as producing expansive rugby.

Can the Sharks continue their winning run?

The Sharks have made an encouraging start to the season, combining physicality with the ability to finish important attacking opportunities. Their win over Leinster showed that they can stay in the contest under pressure and capitalise when opportunities arise.

Their forward pack will be central to their approach in Cape Town. With Ox Nche, Thomas du Toit, and Eben Etzebeth in the starting lineup, the visitors have the power to challenge the Stormers at scrum time and in the collisions. They will also look to put pressure on the hosts’ lineout and disrupt their attacking platforms.

At the breakdown, the Sharks must be disciplined against a Stormers side featuring experienced loose forwards. In the backline, Andre Esterhuizen’s direct running and Vusi Moyo’s attacking influence could help the visitors gain ground and put the home defence under pressure.

The key for the Sharks will be to combine their physical approach with accurate execution. If they win the set-piece battle, limit penalties and turn pressure into points, they have a strong chance of extending their unbeaten start.

Players to Watch

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (Stormers)

Feinberg-Mngomezulu is one of the Stormers’ most influential attacking players. His ability to vary the tempo, create opportunities for teammates, and threaten the defensive line makes him a key figure in the hosts’ game plan. If he can find space and combine effectively with Willemse and Reinach, the Stormers could trouble the Sharks’ defence throughout the match.

Vusi Moyo (Sharks)

Moyo is a player to watch after contributing 14 points in the Sharks’ 41-24 victory over the Ospreys. His ability to contribute on the scoreboard makes him an important part of the visitors’ attacking setup. Against the Stormers, his decision-making and execution could prove valuable in a match where every scoring opportunity matters.

Prediction

This coastal derby should be a closely contested affair, with the Stormers looking to use home advantage to bounce back from their defeat in Edinburgh. Their returning Springboks strengthen the side, and their attacking options give them every chance of putting the Sharks under pressure.

However, the Sharks’ unbeaten start and back-to-back victories over the Ospreys and Leinster make them difficult to overlook. Their forward power and confidence could give them the edge in a match likely to be decided by small margins.

The Stormers should make the visitors work hard for the result, but the Sharks have shown enough in their opening two fixtures to suggest they can leave Cape Town with another victory.

Prediction: Sharks to win
