Springboks v Wales: Preview and Predictions

The Springboks return to Kings Park looking to make it three wins from three in the Nations Championship. Read our Springboks vs Wales preview for team news, tactical analysis, players to watch, predicted outcome, and everything you need to know before kick-off.

After their win over Scotland last weekend, the Springboks officially became the first nation to beat all Six Nations teams within a 12-month span. They’ll be looking to continue this dominance over Wales in the Nations Championship match on Saturday, 18 July.

The Springboks have previously enjoyed the upper hand in this rivalry, especially in their 2025 match in Cardiff. This match was the heaviest home defeat for Wales and was a record-setting performance by South Africa with a 73-0 win.

With confidence high after their two Nations Championship performances so far, the Springboks will be looking to make it three for three and continue building momentum ahead of next year’s Rugby World Cup

Why This Match Matters So Much

For the Springboks, it’s another chance to fine-tune combinations, build squad depth, and give players valuable playing time ahead of the Rugby World Cup. Competition for places remains fierce, meaning every performance could influence selection over the coming months.

Rassie Erasmus has completely changed up the team compared to last weekend, giving uncapped players a chance to make their mark.

For Wales, this is an opportunity to regain confidence after a difficult period. A strong performance against the reigning world champions would boost them as they continue rebuilding under a new generation of players.

Tactical Overview

South Africa are expected to stick to the formula that has brought them success throughout the Nations Championship. One defined by dominant forward play, relentless defence, and clinical finishing out wide.

The Springboks have consistently played with powerful scrums, aggressive carries, and accurate lineouts. Captain Pieter-Steph du Toit will once again lead a physical loose trio alongside Paul de Villiers and Jasper Wiese, aiming to win the gain line and slow Welsh possession.

Wales are likely to rely on structured defence and territory. They will attempt to limit South Africa’s attacking opportunities before striking through quick counter-attacks.

Players to Watch

Pieter-Steph du Toit (Springboks)

Setting the standard for loose forwards in world rugby, Pieter-Steph du Toit is certainly a player to watch. He is a two-time World Rugby Player of the Year. This has made him known for his relentless work rate, spectacular tackles, and ability to dominate the breakdown. As Springbok captain, he’ll be expected to lead from the front against Wales.

Prediction

The Springboks have looked dominant throughout the Nations Championship, with their powerful forward pack and dangerous backline proving too much for opponents. Home advantage at Kings Park should only strengthen their chances.

Wales continue to rebuild and will need a near-perfect performance to trouble the world champions. While the visitors should show more resistance than they did in Cardiff last year, South Africa’s superior depth, physicality, and experience should see them pull away comfortably in the second half.

Prediction: Springboks to win.
