As the opening match of the 2026 season, the Springboks take on the Barbarians on Saturday, 20 June. This match continues these two sides’ 74-year rivalry. The Springboks are chasing a second year in a row win, while the Barbarians are looking for redemption after their 54-7 loss last season.

With this win, the Springboks will be heading into this match full of confidence. Rassie Erasmus’ side has built a reputation of physicality, defensive discipline, and attacking depth. This match provides them with an opportunity to build momentum ahead of a busy international season kicking off in two weeks with the Nations Championship.

Meanwhile, the Barbarians arrive with a squad filled with international experience and attacking flair. They will be determined to show what they’re worth after last year’s loss. So, their blend of world-class talent and attacking rugby style will go up against the world’s number one team.

Why This Match Matters So Much

Although this match is not an official Test match, both sides have something to prove.

For the Springboks, it provides Erasmus with an opportunity to test new player combinations while trying out uncapped players. This fixture also allows the Springboks to build momentum ahead of the upcoming season. The Boks will want to start the season strong with a win to show the world why they’re number one.

For the Barbarians, this match is an opportunity to showcase the attacking rugby that’s made the invitational side famous. The BaaBaas will be eager to challenge the world champions and show them what they’re made of.

Tactical Overview

Expect the Springboks to bring the heat with their powerful forwards. They’ll be looking to establish dominance at scrum time, control territory through tactical kicking, and generate a quick ball.

Erasmus will likely encourage a structured power game combined with an expansive attacking style. This combination will be crucial for a Bok win.

When talking about this game, Erasmus said: “It’s always exciting to face the BaaBaas, and we are looking forward to hosting them in South Africa for the second year in a row – this time at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, where we have traditionally enjoyed fantastic support.

“With the Nations Championship encounter against England two weeks later, this will be an ideal opportunity to get the players match-ready against a side that always boasts top players from across the world.

“The key for us, however, will be to focus on our structures and what we want to achieve on the field. This is a new season with two exciting competitions, so the sooner we get into a Test match mindset, the better.”

But this “Test match mindset” might be shaky considering the number of players out for this game. This is either due to injury or because of the United Rugby Championship Grand Final happening between the Vodacom Bulls and Leinster Rugby on 19 June.

The Barbarians are likely to play to their strengths and take advantage of the players missing from the Springbok squad. Expect them to play the ball wide and attack from deep positions. Their biggest challenge will be handling the Springboks’ defensive pressure and physicality at the breakdown.

So, if the Boks maintain control over possession and set-piece dominance, you’ll see them dictating the pace of the match.

Players to Watch

Riley Norton (Springboks)

All eyes will be on Riley Norton as he plays his first senior Springbok match. The young lock earned recognition captaining the Junior Springboks to their World Rugby U20 Championship glory in 2025. Norton is known for his physicality, work rate, and leadership abilities. A strong performance against the Barbarians will hopefully cement his spot in the Springboks and mark the start of his international career.

Warrick Gelant (Barbarians)

DHL Stormers player Warrick Gelant has swapped sides and is representing the Barbarians in this match against his nation. Gelant has played 10 times for his country in test matches and has scored three tries. He brings an element of risk with his style of rugby, which will be appreciated by the Barbarians.

Prediction

After their 54-7 loss last year, the Barbarians will be bringing their all. They will be looking for a redemption win.

But the Springboks have the advantage of being the more physical and experienced side. Not only this, but they have home advantage and a 51-man squad to decide from. This makes them a-shooing to win.

Prediction: Springboks to win
