Rugby season is almost upon us, and Springbok fans were worried due to the extensive list of injured players. But on Thursday, Rassie Erasmus delivered some encouraging news for South African fans.

He confirmed that several key players are on track to return from injury ahead of the international season. Among the returns were Malcolm MarxSacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Cobus Reinach. Erasmus also confirmed that RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith will not be returning any time soon.

So, as the Springboks prepare for their opening fixture against the Barbarians next Saturday, 20 June, the latest injury list provides a clearer picture of how the world champions are shaping up.

Malcolm Marx Cleared for Springbok Return

The 2025 World Rugby Player of the Year as well as the SA Rugby Player of the Year, Malcolm Marx, will return to the Springboks after suffering an injury while playing in Japan.

The experienced hooker is ready to return according to Erasmus. He will be ready in time for the Nations Championship campaign against England next month

“Eben will be ready; Malcolm is also ready,” Erasmus said.

Marx is a crucial player for the Springboks, as he’s one of the best hookers in the world. He plays an important role at both set-piece time and at the breakdown.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu on Track for New Zealand Series

Another significant update involved Sacha-Feinberg Mngomezulu, who was injured during the DHL Stormers vs Cardiff match.

Erasmus said that: “Sacha should be ready about four weeks before the New Zealand matches.”

This is good news for the backline as Feinberg-Mngomezulu has quickly established himself as South Africa’s most exciting talent. His return will provide the Springboks with added creativity and depth ahead of the New Zealand series.

Reinach Racing Against Time

Veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach is also nearing return. But Erasmus said that it might be difficult for him to feature early in the campaign.

“Cobus Reinach could be ready for England, but it will be a push,” Erasmus explained.

“If he hears me say this, he will get upset, but he will probably only join the squad after the three incoming matches.”

While Reinach’s return may be slightly delayed, the Springboks receive a boost with Grant Williams being ready and fit for selection.

More Good News for the Springboks

After the extensive list of injured players that have been circulating over the last few weeks, Erasmus provided more positive updates.

Morne van den Berg is expected to return in time for the New Zealand series. Ethan Hooker is expected to be back around the same time as Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“Krappies will possibly be available by the time we play New Zealand, or even Scotland and Wales,” Erasmus said.

Long-Term Injury Concerns Remain

Few players have been sidelined for an extended period of time. These players include RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith, who are out for the season. Ruan Venter, Jean-Luc du Preez, Jaden Hendrikse, Marnus van der Merwe, and Deon Fourie are out with long-term injuries.

But despite these setbacks, Erasmus believes that the squad remains in a strong position ahead of the international season.

Bulls Springboks to Miss Barbarian Clash

The overlap between the United Rugby Championship Grand Final and the Barbarians fixture means that the Springboks will be without key players. This has forced the coaching staff to look at alternative combinations from the squad list.

Erasmus commented on this, saying, “Sometimes a team going into a final, getting the momentum, getting the winning aura is sometimes better than a player that beats, hopefully beats Leinster.”

He went on to say that the Bulls “are in the URC final. They match fit. They match ready.

“We see it as a hell of a positive and hopefully the winning feeling coming into the .”

So despite the Bulls’ Springbok players missing this first clash, Erasmus believes that they will be well prepared for the international season once they rejoin the squad.
