Mexico Legends put on a strong performance as they beat Bafana Legends 5-2 in a fun rematch of the 2010 FIFA World Cup opener.

The game brought back memories, with former players from both teams meeting again in Pachuca on Sunday. These are the same players who featured in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Back then, Bafana Bafana and Mexico drew 1-1 in the opening match of the tournament. Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a famous goal for South Africa, while Rafael Márquez grabbed the equaliser for Mexico.

This match was part of the build-up to the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday, 11 June.

Mexico in Control

From the first whistle, Mexico Legends were on fire. They played quick, attacking football and made life very difficult for Bafana Legends.

Mexico led 2-0 at half-time and could have scored more, but Itumeleng Khune made some big saves to keep his team in the game.

In the second half, Mexico turned up the pressure and scored three more goals to make it 5-0.

Pablo Barrera and Luis Ángel Landín both scored twice, while Murillo also got on the scoresheet.

Bafana Bafana Legends Fight Back Late

Bafana Bafana Legends did not give up. Reneilwe Letsholonyane scored to pull one back, and Siphiwe Tshabalala later added a penalty.

But it was too late, and Mexico walked away with a comfortable 5-2 win.

All Eyes on the World Cup Clash

While the legends were unable to secure victory, the occasion successfully rekindled memories of South Africa’s famous 2010 World Cup journey.

The focus now shifts to Hugo Broos’ current Bafana Bafana squad, who will hope to deliver a stronger result when they face Mexico in the official World Cup opener.

If the atmosphere and passion shown in Pachuca are anything to go by, football fans can expect another memorable chapter in the rivalry between these two nations. Bet on the FIFA World Cup 2026 with Bet.co.za today, and be a part of every action.
